The Bills are getting a $1.4bn stadium, but taxpayers will pick up the tab

The Bills are becoming a case study in how property deals get struck between power brokers and politicians, laying bare the question of what, if anything, a team owes its community

The Buffalo Bills are among the favorites to win the Super Bowl in February but Dennice Barr has other priorities as winter approaches.

Barr is a community leader in the Fruit Belt, an historic but deprived majority African American area near downtown Buffalo. With a median household income of under $28,000, a ticket to an NFL game is out of reach for many residents. As the cost of living soars and the weather worsens they are more focused on access to food and heating.

Named for the orchards planted in the 1800s by German immigrants, the Fruit Belt became popular with Black arrivals in the 1950s but its character and prosperity were devastated by a new expressway that barrels through the neighborhood; dividing the community, Barr said, “for the benefit of white flight”.

1. Interesting read

I didn’t realize that sports teams will threaten to leave if they don’t get funding for new stadiums. That is one reason why stadiums are being built all over the country. For example, if the bills left, 10,000 union jobs would go with it. That might just piss off the voters according to the article. So there’s a lot going on here.

2. Tax payer funded sports stadiums are another scourge

That needs eradicating.

Buffalo stadium isn’t the only one. Texas Rangers got 2 built within 10 years of each other.
There are many more
Millionaires being bailed by taxpayers

3. I remember, it was about 15 years ago, Miss "Merica contest threatened to leave Atlantic City.

Nets were also threatening to leave N.J.

I calls the state radio station, 101.5. "I'm ok if Miss 'America leaves as long as they take the Nets with 'em.

That got played as a bumper promotion for a few weeks.

4. This happens often when a team starts winning.

The Bills have been struggling until the last few years. Teams like to strike when the iron is hot.

5. Terry and Kim Pegula, the Bills owners,

come across to me as self-centered and thoughtless, with no concern for the community as a whole.

Prime example: In 2014, just before Thanksgiving, Buffalo was hit with a major snowstorm that dropped 7 feet of snow. There were 14 fatalities, thousands of stranded motorists, roof collapses, falling trees and downed power lines as snow fell st a rate of 6 inches per hour.

Governor Cuomo came to Buffalo to personally assist with emergency actions, like igetting equipment from other counties sent to Buffalo. Both the governor and mayor requested that people with snowmobiles join an organized effort reach stranded people and people with medical conditions who needed medicines, dialysis, had heart attacks, needed heat and food, etc. They announced a ban on travel for everyone except emergency personnel and their volunteers.

So in the middle of this life threatening crisis, the Pegulas put out a request online and on local broadcast stations for volunteers to show up at the stadium to clear it of snow so that a scheduled game could be played.

Never mind the risks of travel to the stadium that would further burden emergency officials. Never mind the use of snowmobiles by volunteers to get to the stadium that could be better used to rescue stranded people. Never mind the snow equipment used by volunteers at the stadium which could be better volunteered for use to clear main streets for fire and ambulance vehicles. Never mind the people who could get hurt or have heart attacks trying to remove such huge amounts of snow with shovels. Or the fact that, even if clearing the stadium was possible, almost nobody would be able to show up for a game.

I heard a couple of those broadcast requests that treated the situation like a competition to see who was "tough enough" to respond. They offered something like $10/hour to everyone who showed up.

After a couple hours of those messages, the governor (and maybe the mayor too, not sure) requested that the Pegulas stop their offer for the sake of public safety. The governor and mayor reminded people of the travel ban and the seriousness of the storm and its damage to homes, public buildings, stranded people, and medical emergencies.

6. That's some real self-entitled jerks

Could the opponent team even get there to play, probably not.
