Church & State Separation Key to Democracy. Fascist Spain: Babies Taken, Sold to Wealthy, 'Red Gene'

- 'More Evidence That Separation of Church and State Is Essential for Democracy,' Daily Kos, Sept. 28, 2022. -Ed.

- NYT, "Taken Under Fascism, Spain's 'Stolen Babies' Are Learning the Truth," 9/27/22. Thousands of Spanish children were taken from hospitals & sold to wealthy Catholic families. The NY Times Mag. article is about Ana Belen Pintaldo's discovery of the true story of her childhood, & the people she thought were her parents during a chapter in Spanish history with which the country is still coming to grips. (*Link should allow entry through NYT pay wall — also in audio form, 55 mins). https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/27/magazine/spain-stolen-babies.html
--------------------------
- Background: ...Pintado took a closer look at the birth certificate. She could see that someone had torn off the top third of the paper, leaving a jagged edge behind. Her birth certificate had been tampered with; there had been something here that someone wanted to hide. “I knew this couldn’t be my mother. And that’s when I thought, I might be a stolen baby.” She had long known about the phenomenon of babies stolen from hospitals in Spain. The thefts happened during the end of the regime of Franco, the right-wing dictator who ruled the country until 1975, & even today the disappearances remain a subject of mystery & debate among scholars.
-------------
According to the birth mothers, nuns who worked in maternity wards took the infants shortly after they were delivered & told the women, who were often unwed or poor, that their children were stillborn. But the babies were not dead: They had been sold, discreetly, to well-off Catholic parents, many of whom could not have families of their own. Under a pile of forged papers, the adoptive families buried the secret of the crime they committed. The children who were taken were known in Spain simply as the “stolen babies.” No one knows exactly how many were kidnapped, but estimates suggest tens of thousands.

The stolen-baby phenomenon was just one part of a national nightmare that began in Spain with Franco’s rise to power. A RW army commander, Francisco Franco was among a group of military officers who plotted to overthrow Spain’s govt. in a 1936 army rebellion, triggering the Spanish Civil War. - Overnight, Spain went from an elected democracy to a country in which death squads rounded up & executed leftists & intellectuals. - When Franco’s Nationalists could not subdue the Basque Country, they called on warplanes from Nazi Germany that flattened the town of Guernica, inspiring the famed painting by Picasso that bears its name.

The ruthlessness was typical of a new brand of authoritarianism that began toppling democracies one by one in Europe in the 1930s. But unlike Adolf Hitler, Franco survived World War II. Spain’s regime lived on as an enduring fascist state in the heart of modern Europe.

- The story tells of Pintado’s realization that there are things the people she thought were her parents had never told her, & it was not until after they had died that she began to suspect what turned out to be the truth. - Along the way the story tells of cooperation between the Catholic Church & the government in a scheme that had as a nominal justification, the idea of children of ‘leftist’ parents could be raised as ‘proper’ citizens if raised by the kind of people who fit the mythos Fascism in Spain was promoting: - As Spain’s supreme leader, Franco took the title Caudillo, or “strongman,” & soon began stripping away social freedoms within the country. * Up to the early 1930s, Spain had been among Europe’s most progressive countries, allowing for married couples to divorce & women to seek abortions.

Under Franco, those rights were swiftly rescinded. Contraception was outlawed, adultery was criminalized & women lost the right to vote. Newspapers were censored, & many books were banned altogether, including those of Federico García Lorca, Spain’s most renowned poet & playwright..

If any of the above seems to resemble what certain groups & individuals think is needed to “take back America”, well….* But one of the most lasting abuses of the era was borne by children. In the late 1930s & 1940s, Antonio Vallejo-Nájera, a leading psychiatrist in the regime who was trained in Nazi Germany, promoted the idea of a Marxist “RED GENE” carried by the children of Franco’s left-wing opponents. The gene, he said, might be suppressed by removing children from their mothers & placing them with conservative families. Franco’s men began abductions on a large scale- orphans of Franco’s firing squads & newborns belonging to women who had given birth in jail as political prisoners...

- News Report, Democracy Now! A new film, 'The Silence of Others' warns against Spain's Fascist history repeating itself. (Dec. 2018).

A far-right, anti-immigrant, anti-abortion political party in Spain has made gains in regional elections prompting protests in the streets. Members of Spain's younger generation are too young to remember the brutal, 40-year military dictatorship under Francisco Franco.

But a remarkable new documentary, titled 'The Silence of Others' or 'El Silencio de Otros' hopes to remind Spaniards of the country's fascist past, lest history repeat itself. The film follows several survivors of the Fascist regime, and others pursuing justice. - We speak with the writer and filmmakers.

3. I wonder how many of these we'll keep finding out about here.

The efforts are part of a wide-ranging campaign to track down parents separated from their children at the U.S. border beginning in 2017 under the Trump administration’s most controversial immigration policy. It is now clear that the parents of 545 of the migrant children still have not been found, according to court documents filed this week in a case challenging the practice.

About 60 of the children were under the age of 5 when they were separated, the documents show.

The Trump administration first provided a court-ordered accounting of separated families in June 2018, stating at the time that about 2,700 children had been taken from their parents after crossing into the United States. After months of searching by a court-appointed steering committee, which includes a private law firm and several immigrant advocacy organizations, all of those families were eventually tracked down and offered the opportunity to be reunited.

But in January 2019, a report by the Health and Human Services Department’s Office of Inspector General confirmed that many more children had been separated, including under a previously undisclosed pilot program conducted in El Paso between June and November 2017, before the administration’s widely publicized “zero tolerance” policy officially went into effect.

of the Indigenous in the "new world", the Magdalene Laundries, the church's treatment of Jews, its collusion with the evil regimes in WWII, catholic "health care", and now this. . .it seems there is no end, no bottom, to the horrors of the rcc.
