Michelle Goldberg: Biden Is Too Old To Be President Again

This is not the most helpful thing Ms. Goldberg could have written about Joe Biden, to say the least. But there it is on the NYT op-ed page. Apologies in advance if someone has posted this previously.

By the way, Ms. Goldberg does make some useful observations when discussing the advanced age of so many of our political leaders. Biden should not be singled out for most of her criticism, however, when he deserves it the least. And her characterization of the state of the nation, Post-Trump, is on point.

I can’t help feeling very sorry for Joe Biden. He’s wanted to be president for most of his life, first running 34 years ago. Had his son Beau not died in 2015, Biden might have entered the Democratic primary then; as vice president he would have been a favorite and likely would have beaten Donald Trump.

By the time he finally achieved the office he longed for, he was far past his prime. Trump had left the country in ruins, its institutions collapsing, much of the population gripped by furious delusions, and millions traumatized by the pandemic. Biden was elected to bring back a normality that now appears to be gone for good.

1. Sounds coated in

despair and cynicism. Although Biden can do some things, it's going to take everybody pulling together to come back from the Trump years.

2. Goldberg needs to sit down and shut up

Now is not the time to be having these thoughts. Wait until after the mid-terms as this negativity could depress Democratic voters this November.

Next year will be a fine time for Democrats to start considering our Party's future plans. Right now we have a very important election to focus on.

21. Imagining the FACE she would make if she HEARD that gives me 'Democratic Indigestion Syndrome!'

... i hate to even THINK that... Goldberg is le kvetcher sacré as far as I'm concerned. She has the most wonderful writings on political optimism I've ever read but she also seems to find the dead end of worst of all possible roads. But GEE... July before the election is NOT the time for all the war gaming. Yes we have backed ourselves into a corner. We chose Biden knowing that the usual circular firing squad/Bernie fantasists would gather. We went with Harris thinking "she just SEEMS like that.. I'm sure she REALLY ISN'T this person" ... and now we don't even live in a Klobucharan Warrenesque "at least she's REALLY SMART" world that got us through the last 5 decades. Now we're just up against it and we're all required to be 70+ million George Kennedy's trying to "red line this sucker"! It's not an enviable position to be in. If only EVERY Democrat had the good sense that God gave Pete Buttigieg I'm sure we'd all sleep better with all of these massive headwinds blowing about!

4. 'Biden Bad, Democrats in Disarray' - sure Michelle, hop on the dumb ass media bandwagon

Why don’t you write a piece on the fact that Republicans have zero plans to make most Americans lives better?

8. I would rather have an 80 year-old Joe than a 45 year-old Ron DeSantis ANY DAY.

Why doesn't anyone ever tell McConnell he's too old and should retire?

10. I have changed my position in the past few months

This isn’t just reflecting on Biden, but I think we need an age limit for Congressional members, and an age and term limit for federal judges. I would look at something around 70-72 as the oldest age one could begin a term.

I had a friend contact me the other day to discuss that he would be looking for full or part time work if the right opportunity comes along. He probably makes $300k as a senior executive at an international consulting firm, but they do not allow anyone - from the CEO on down - to work past 65.

12. If old people get the votes, that's the elected official. Period.

Here’s the catch 22

Republicans want us to work past 70. But we lose our jobs at 55 to hire cheaper young people. Then we can’t find any well paying jobs once we’ve reached 70.

So stick you ageism up you payroll.

13. If young people get the vote

It doesn’t work that way.
25 is minimum age for the House, 30 for Senate and 35 for President, so it makes just as much sense to set upper limits.

15. To you.. Not to others. Even if Biden's body falls apart but his brain still works like it is...

I will support him.

It’s still ageism you’re pushing.

22. Bottom line: it is his decision along with Party leaders.

However, even if he has no plans to run again, it would be politically stupid to make himself a Lame Duck at this point.

25. It's not like it isn't a legitimate worry.

Lots of people Biden's age have lost a step or two. I think he could pull it out next year, particularly against Trump, but I wouldn't be surprised if he passes before January 2029. He'd be 87. Lots of people die before they're 87.

I had Ageist concerns about HRC in 2016 (she was only 69!), but it turns out the bigger issue was that American are misogynist bumpkins.

Goldberg's spot on here:
Trump had left the country in ruins, its institutions collapsing, much of the population gripped by furious delusions, and millions traumatized by the pandemic. Biden was elected to bring back a normality that now appears to be gone for good.
