An Evangelical Perspective on January 6th

There are religious doctrinal perspectives in this piece, but the point is being made that if you believe in core doctrines that are part of the Protestant, Evangelical tradition, participating in or supporting an insurrection is more than just "inconsistent" with what you claim to believe, it is antithetical to its core principles.

The way the media handles the issue of the "conservative religious right" and "white Evangelical Christians" leaves the misimpression that if you are a Democrat and you walk into an "Evangelical" church, you are on hostile ground. The "conservative religious right" does indeed have a large number of white Evangelicals in its make-up, but it also has a large number of conservative Catholics as well, since it is primarily organized around abortion rights, which is one of very few points on which they agree. But a large percentage of Evangelicals are not white. In fact, I'd venture to say that over half of those who are members of churches which fall under the "Evangelical" banner are not white, but African-American, Latino and Asian, and their churches are far from hostile territory for Democrats, and in fact, have worked through all of the politics and stances of "Trumpism" and by conviction, don't support him.

The only authority on what Evangelicals believe is Evangelicals tbemselves. If 4 out of 5 say that it would be a moral choice to cut Pence's heart out and eat it, that would be an Evangelical belief, no matter what the True Scotsman says.

and what they actually preach, teach and believe are different things, even though they continue to insist that they haven't changed.

It's a standard practice among some Evangelicals, those that are more prone to follow right wing politics than Biblical doctrine, to twist things out of their original context, misquote, exaggerate or ignore the original thought completely to make a point when someone points out that they're not being consistent with their own Biblical doctrine. And congregational authority makes it hard for pastors who know the truth to actually preach it, or point out errors in interpretation because members of the congregation can simply fire him.

but when you cross over into politics, its the votes that matter. Many Evangelicals believe Mormonism is a cult, and the Catholic Church is apostate, but if they vote conservative, might as well count the ballots this side of heaven.

But not all Evangelicals are "conservatives" or "fundamentalists" who hold those perspectives of others.

Catholic/Protestant schism in the first place. Maybe the end here will be a further schism in their ranks ?

I've often wondered how quickly Jesus would overturn the tables at these megachurches and who he'd lump their leaders in with. The prosperity folks would line up to crucify him all over again.
