How many unvaccinated people will stop wearing masks now?

Weíre entering a big new era in the coronavirus pandemic, and itís one that will strike you the moment you venture into public: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said it no longer recommends that vaccinated people wear masks in most situations, including indoors. Almost immediately, people began shedding the masks that have become ubiquitous in our lives over the past year-plus.

The implementation of this carries some obvious challenges, though. Chief among them: Wonít this just free up unvaccinated people to also not wear masks? Even if verifying vaccination status werenít such a thorny issue (vaccine passports), itís completely impractical to do so in everyday public interactions.

The most important thing for the vaccinated to know is that, according to the CDC, they donít have to worry.

But as with getting vaccinated, itís not just about you; itís also about stopping the spread of the virus in the broader society. Freeing up the unverifiable unvaccinated to blend in with their vaccinated neighbors by taking off their masks could allow them to more easily spread the disease among themselves. That could, in turn, make it more difficult to stamp out the virus. People have been talking about this in terms of whether the unvaccinated will simply ďlieĒ about their status, but they wonít really even have to do that; they can just take off their masks.

3. At this point I am at The Who cares stage.

If they donít want to get vaccinated, get sick and possibly die itís gods will. They seem to use gods will in a lot of odd circumstances, so I am going to go with it too. That and a Darwin Award. You just canít fix stupid, go with the science or donít. The vaccine is available to almost all who want it. There is a very small universe that canít get it and they will need to remain masked longer as the selfish duches die off or develop immunity through infection. I give up, you just canít fix stupid.

8. I'd agree if it were not for the fact that the more hosts, the more variations and the more

variations the greater likelihood that one mutation will be the one that vaccines don't protect against. Then we're back to square one. I also feel like the medical community has been left holding the bag for these idiots' "freedumb" at every turn in this pandemic.

I truly don't care about the imbeciles anymore, but as usual, they will bring the rest of us down with them.

11. I am usually a glass is half full person, but I have given up.

I am disappointed in my self, but I am at the end of my chain. Let them die, I usually want to protect even the stupid, but I have just had it. It it mutates, I will lock myself down, I spent the last year going to work while my wife worked from home and my kids went to school from home. I will do what we can to protect ourselves, but these fucking peopleÖ

16. I'm right there with you.

"Let them die" - or some variation thereof - has crossed my lips more times than I can count these last few months. I'm not proud of it but I. AM. DONE. I'm over it.

There's entirely too much stupid in the world and these idiots wear their stupidity like a badge of honor. Never seen anything like it, at least not on this large a scale.

5. There's no way to stop them...

And I don't care. Now that anyone that wants to be vaccinated, can be, we don't have vulnerables who have had no choice to be unvaccinated.

I've been completely vaccinated for about six weeks now. I have zero concern.

Live and let live.

6. what about children who have no immunity, and no expectation of safety now?

I think what you mean is live and let die.

12. There are children with no immunity...

But, isn't that very rare? COVID would be one of many deadly pathogens for a child with zero immunity. I would expect their parents to be very proactively protective. Life for those children must be quite and often miserable.

My child's school met in-person all school year (last week was the end of the year) , save for a handful of children whose parents opted for online classes. There were very few cases, with none serious or deadly. Children thankfully seem to be nearly immune to this disease.

There are adults with low immunity who are more susceptible to COVID. They should take steps to protect themselves the best they can. But, the rest of us should not be constrained for a small few. There'll always be some group needing accommodation.

15. Maybe a bit longer

The 1918 pandemic went on for three years. We have the vaccines, but it is unclear if they can reduce the overall timespan. Then there is the possibility of it becoming endemic.

10. Sacramento CA checking in....

I was out today at Target and Guitar Center and 7Eleven and maskers were 100% indoors, 30% outdoors. This was the morning crowd so your mileage may vary.

We'll have to see how it goes...someone is making the calculation that overall this is gonna work better than other approaches. Time will tell. Seems like they are putting all efforts into getting everyone vaccinated. They have faith in it. If setting us mask-free gets the job done quicker and saves more lives it might be a good thing.

I do understand at-risk folks, though, having everyone running around un-masked, not knowing who is or isn't jabbed puts them in peril. I just hope everyone who can, gets the shot ASAP.
