What's in an adjective? 'Democrat Party' label on the rise

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Two days before the assault on the U.S. Capitol, Pennsylvania state Sen. Doug Mastriano, a Republican, said supporters of then-President Donald Trump’s claims of election fraud were basically in a “death match with the Democrat Party.”

A day later, right-wing activist Alan Hostetter, a staunch Trump supporter known for railing against California’s virus-inspired stay-at-home orders, urged rallygoers in Washington to “put the fear of God in the cowards, the traitors, the RINOs, the communists of the Democrat Party.”

The shared grammatical construction – incorrect use of the noun “Democrat” as an adjective – was far from the most shocking thing about the two men’s statements. But it identified them as members of the same tribe, conservatives seeking to define the opposition through demeaning language.

Amid bipartisan calls to dial back extreme partisanship following the insurrection, the intentional misuse of “Democrat” as an adjective remains in nearly universal use among Republicans. Propelled by conservative media, it also has caught on with far-right elements that were energized by the Trump presidency.

1. Republicans do that all the time..Pisses me off.

Say what you will about Chris Matthews, but if they did it on his show, he'd correct them.

9. Don't get mad, just correct them, and mock their grammar

The idea of "embracing" insults to erase their power is oversold, I think.

10. 'The idea of "embracing" insults to erase their power is oversold, I think.'

Oversold is putting it mildly. “Democrat Party” is a deliberate expression of disrespect. It’s a verbal form of kicking sand in our faces. To pretend otherwise reinforces the idea that the Democratic Party is pathetic and weak. I say call them out every time they use it.

Aren’t there Senate and House rules of civility and decorum that could at least be enforced when Congress is in session?

11. They mean to bully and mock and derogotize, but I say own it.

You go, you know what? I am a proud Democrat. I believe in the principles enshrined in the Democratic party, and that they are far superior to the knee-jerk bigotry and greed based obstructionism of the Regressive Republic party.
We gotta be able to shame them with their childish bullshit in a way that they feel rediculous and ashamed their own lame ass behavior..

Fuck them tump-humping idiots.

12. Saying Democratic Party reminds that we (& America)believe in democracy

Saying Democrat Party instead is not only is an insult, slur it also conveniently denies what we & our party stand for... it's a win win the anti democracy GOP.

13. That's it. They don't like using

the adjective Democratic because, when spoken, it is the same as the small "d" word democratic.

Instead, they will smugly say that the US is a republic, not a democracy, not realizing (or ignoring) the fact that a republic is a representative democracy.

18. I will fight against that usage until the day I die. It is a slur designed solely to goad Democrats

and anger liberals. I suggest we find a term for Trumplicans that will go viral. None of the terms used on DU have had that effect so far. We need something catchy, funny, and belittling.
