The GOP argument against election reform is even worse than you think

Opinion by Paul Waldman
Columnist
March 4, 2021 at 1:05 p.m. EST

On Wednesday, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 1, the For the People Act, a package of reforms meant to guarantee voting rights and fight political corruption. Naturally, Republicans are outraged.

The response of most Democrats is to dismiss Republican objections as bad faith and part of their sweeping war on democracy meant to undermine voting rights so they can win and hold power despite having the support of a minority of the public. Which is perfectly true.

But letís take Republicansí objection to H.R. 1′s provisions seriously. Because when you do, it makes their opposition look even less defensible.

That objection was summarized by former vice president Mike Pence in a recent column:

Every single proposed change in HR 1 serves one goal, and one goal only: to give leftists a permanent, unfair, and unconstitutional advantage in our political system.

5. To Pence: the only permanent, unfair advantage of HR1 is its prevention of cheating and lying

about whose votes get counted.

6. A GOP shill (I hate to call him a "lawyer," even though he probably is) answered a judge's question.

It was about voter suppression, and the answer was kind of jaw-dropping. While I don't have it in front of me to quote it verbatim, the gist of it was "If we can't cheat, we can't win."

He dressed it up a little bit more than that, but that was it in a nutshell.

7. Perhaps if the idiots had a marketable platform, people would vote for them.

As long as they continue to pander to the 1%, they will have to resort to trickery, cheap tactics, and outright bullshit to win a majority of votes - which they have been unable to do in so many cases. Their only option is to rig the game, and they obviously show no embarrassment in doing so.

8. They didn't even have a platform in 2020.

Donald Trump's flat feet, golf bag and Big Mouth was their platform.
