The Memo: Is Trump mounting a comeback -- or finally fading?

BY NIALL STANAGE - 03/03/21 06:00 AM EST

Could former President Trump be — finally — beginning to fade toward the margins of American political life?

The question may seem strange given how completely Trump has dominated the political arena since he began his quest for the presidency in 2015. The news media, and many of his political rivals, have been consumed by his every move since then.

Even after he lost the presidency in November, Trump’s refusal to admit defeat, his incendiary rhetoric and, ultimately, his second impeachment ensured that his shadow loomed large over his successor. But now there are signs — beyond the simple fact that he is out of office — that suggest Trump is beginning to lose his salience to the political world.

For a start, he has been banned from Twitter, apparently for good. This deprives the former president of his favorite megaphone and makes it much harder for him to insert himself into the controversy of the day.

1. Trump has dominated the political arena since 2015 because Big Media allowed him to.

This article being a perfect example. And the 29 million people Trump "inspired" to vote in 2020 who hadn't voted in 2016 (and scoring only 42% of them) is enough "salience" for me.

2. From the looks of him at CPAC, he's fading pretty quickly physically and mentally.

I can't imagine what kind of shape he'll be in come 2024. Perhaps he can get in better condition while in prison, but his brain will be complete mush by then.

8. It could be that the GOP leadership featured Trump as the main speaker for CPAC

As a way to cover their asses with his followers. But that they will now not lift too many fingers to help him regain his former status. They have to at least pretend to be friendly with him. And are hoping, secretly, that his court cases, or just a weariness for his shctick will turn off enough R voters to finally distance themselves from him.
