No, your quarantine is not comparable to Anne Frank's

There are quite a few things Iíve been seeing all over my social media feeds ever since the spread of COVID-19 forced everyone to social distance. There are the jokes about no longer wearing a bra, comments about being confused over what day it is and comparisons to Anne Frank hiding in an attic.

One of these things is not like the other.

The U.S. government recommending individuals to practice social distancing in order to prevent the spread of a deadly virus is not at all similar to being forced into hiding to avoid the impending threat of a state-sponsored genocide. In fact, to make the comparison is egregiously offensive. So why do I keep seeing people doing just that?

On Twitter, if you search ďAnne FrankĒ now, you will find an abundance of users tweeting about how they now know exactly how Anne Frank felt after a week in quarantine. Some of these even go as far as to say that Anne Frank had it much better than us right now. And I feel like I am losing my mind.

When scraping the bottom of the barrel won't suffice...turn it over and dig!

5. people who behave like that

never understood the story. I did tell my friend that I have thought of Anne Frank and her family and how difficult it must have been for them. They had to stay quiet and stay away from fresh air and sunlight for so long. My friend had times where she and her mother had to hide in closets from the Red Army while they searched their home.

This is not that hard.

6. Having visited the Anne Frank house

in Amsterdam myself, I am appalled by anyone who would even think of making such a comparison.

Courageous as the Frank family were - and they were indeed that - I also remain in awe of those who helped the family and who succeeded in doing so for so long. Right in the center of a major city and right under the noses of its Nazi occupiers.

They also paid the price.

8. It seems to me that the comparisons are being made

can be taken and written two different ways.

They could be saying...don't complain about how bad YOU are dealing with this quarantine now since Anne Frank had it a zillion times worse in a zillion ways so stop your bitching and there is no real comparison.

They could be saying that Anne had it bad, BUT she had a boyfriend, etc as an unfunny, lame attempt at humor.

That's how I am interpreting the Fakebook comments.

9. Twitter

And while some may be piss poor humor, others do seem to think there is a comparison. Just to be clear; there isn't.

12. One big difference is food. Some of us are gaining weight

In quarantine. Anne Frank and the others didnít have to worry about that. Food was in short supple for everyone.
