This could be a long fight. People should be told the truth.

This ó that is, all the bad stuff happening right now, including lockdowns, layoffs and daily death tolls ó could last awhile. Months, maybe years.

And Americans need to be better prepared for that possibility, because better-managed expectations are likely to produce better outcomes.

To be sure, the paths of the pandemic and the economy are rife with uncertainty. But data-driven models from professionals inside the administration and outside experts suggest that the twin crises could be deep and prolonged.

For instance, the White House coronavirus task forceís model projects that even with maximum social distancing measures, deaths will continue at least through June. President Trumpís former Food and Drug Administration commissioner, among other public health experts, also expects a renewed outbreak in the fall.

1. I believe my county lockdown

has been extended again for another month, may 30th I think. It's at least until mid may. Coworkers keep asking me if I think this will be over soon. I tell them, "they keep extending the stay at home order. I guarantee you they keep extending it." I've mentally prepared for this to go on until at least September. Damn coronavirus ruined my plans to quit my job and find another. Guess I'm lucky to have a job now.

4. I think we

wonít get back to somewhat normal until we have a vaccine or a medication that helps. Thatís going to be a long while. This belief that deaths will just continue through June is foolish. I donít believe for one minute that deaths will just stop with warmer weather. Maybe it will slow down a bit, but never quite go away.

6. I don't think people have said that deaths will go to zero.

Most models show a rebound sometime in the fall.

The models that do show 0 aren't realistic and aren't really for use by people who don't realize that. There'll be a small number of deaths, and if we're lucky testing and contact tracing that that point can run the sucker to ground.

5. My biggest fear is that things get better,

companies have workers come back, the restaurants and schools re-open, and come October, it comes back with an even greater vengeance.
