Deaths Caused by British Empire Should Be Condemned Just Like Deaths under Stalin

DECEMBER 11 ,2019
BY TOMASZ PIERSCIONEK

Western historians who condemn the USSR for the deaths under Stalinís dictatorship should shed a spotlight on the millions who died under British rule, including those in engineered famines across the Indian subcontinent.

The UK general election is a week away and a significant chunk of the countryís media, three-quarters of which is reportedly owned by a few billionaires, is hard at work digging up dirt on Jeremy Corbyn to prevent a Labour Party victory at all costs. However, this uphill task is becoming harder as recent polls show the frequently cited Conservative lead over Labour is rapidly decreasing. The possibility that Mr. Corbyn will be Britainís next prime minister, perhaps at the head of a minority government, is now grudgingly acknowledged.

When Corbyn launched Labourís manifesto at the end of November, he pledged to conduct a formal enquiry into the legacy of the British Empire ďto understand our contribution to the dynamics of violence and insecurity across regions previously under British colonial ruleĒ and set up an organization ďto ensure historical injustice, colonialism, and role of the British Empire is taught in the national curriculum.Ē

The idea of teaching a population about the unsavory aspects of its history, and in Britainís case revealing how several of todayís geopolitical crises are rooted in the past folly and avarice-fuelled actions of its ruling class, is commendable.

2. Hell. While we are at it let's get the Vikings and the Romans involved!

History involving humans has always repeated itself because humans are basically greedy, barbaric stupid creatures. "Get over it!"

3. I think it's arguable that the old Spanish Empire

Had an impressive body count, too.

For all of the indignation of former British colonized and guilt-tripping Brits, the death toll of the Spanish Empire was also very impressive. A lot of those slave ships docked at Spanish Caribbean ports and off-loaded their human cargos there.

Iím fact, I think itís arguable that the slave tradeís Spanish Caribbean sector had a far higher death toll than slaveryís death toll in the British North American colonies.

Nor did it come to a stop in the 1820ís. Spain didnít outlaw slavery in Spanish Cuba until 1886Ėover half a century AFTER Britain abolished the evil practice.

4. Well, the Tories want to Make the Empire Great Again...

... so it's predictable that the Liberals want the opposite. The whole concept of Brexit is to glorify Britain by separating her from a coalition that limits her sovereignty. Much like the current GOP agenda for the US. And it's a concept with legs among the ignorant, just as MAGA is hugely popular among the ignorant in the US.
