Gun bill "dead": White House says impeachment killed "chances of legislative progress"
A Senate staffer told Washington Free Beacon reporter Stephen Gutowski that gun legislation is dead, at least for the time being, because of the impeachment inquiry that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Tuesday.
Gutowski reported that the White House was still floating proposals as recently as last week but it seems the idea now is work on that front will slow or stop as White House focuses on impeachment.
"I think the impeachment stuff sucks up all the oxygen but things can always change on a dime as happened this week," a second Senate staffer told Gutowski.

What a crock. Mitch is already on record saying he won't bring up gun control unless Trump says he'll sign it. Democrats in the House have passed gun control legislation, but McConnell refuses to bring it to the floor of the Senate. Then they have the gall to blame Democrats for their inaction while more people die in mass shootings.
Can anyone say hypocrisy?
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday he will not put a gun bill of any kind on the Senate floor unless President Donald Trump says he would sign it into law.
Days after a West Texas mass shooting that killed at least seven people, the Kentucky Republican said on "The Hugh Hewitt Show" he expects to get an answer from the Trump administration within the next week on what, if anything, it is prepared to support.
"If the President is in favor of a number of things that he has discussed openly and publicly, and I know that if we pass it, it will become law, I'll put it on the floor," McConnell said on the radio show.
McConnell has for months blocked nearly every piece of legislation passed by the Democratic-led House, including gun measures popular with the public that enjoy bipartisan support on Capitol Hill. In the wake of a string of mass shootings that have rocked the nation, frustrated Democrats have been mounting a push against McConnell and Republican leadership to take up gun legislation.

(16,254 posts)Trump or McConnell. May this be the straw we've been waiting for. There are many Republicans who also want the gun bills to go through. McConnell's camel is about to have some serious downtime.

(25,806 posts)not have to move on any gun-related legislation. These cowards will use impeachment as that excuse. How despicable!!!!

(10,875 posts)You just know that was at least part of the deal Trump was offering.
That in itself could be abuse of Presidential Powers... though a certain about of arm twisting and horse trading are pretty typical in getting bill passed.

(52,129 posts)This needs to be broadcasted!!! They will blame Dems for not passing legislation that McConnell will now hold as hostage due to impeachment.
