A cautious hope emerges among Alexandria Ocasio-Cortezs constituents
By Robert Samuels January 5 at 8:55 PM
NEW YORK Molly Roth was proud to move to a neighborhood she considered real America. As she walked along the main thoroughfares in this 170,000-resident enclave of Queens, she heard conversations in languages she did not know. She passed corner stores selling fruits that she had never seen. And now she sat in Arepa Lady, a restaurant that specializes in Colombias sweet corn cakes, biting into food she never had before.
Roth then noted one other thing she liked about the neighborhood.
I got to vote for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, she said.
Are you in her district? a friend asked. Thats really cool.
A cautious hope is reemerging in this slice of America, and it has come from the most American of traditions: voting. Residents clamoring for change in the 14th Congressional District last year ousted a 56-year-old white Democrat, one of the most powerful men in Washington, and replaced him with a 29-year-old Latina socialist working as a bartender.
But they didnt stop there. They voted a formerly undocumented immigrant to the state assembly, and they replaced another long-standing politician in the state Senate. The political old guard had been toppled. In its stead were three leftist Latinas with no prior experience in government, who echoed their neighborhoods desire for a radical shift in politics.

(53,726 posts)fortunately with little success, has something to do with it. That's past her now and let's hope she represents her district well.
Autumn
(44,961 posts)Sure go with that

(44,961 posts)criticize AOC for doing what she wants to do or what is her right to do. I learned long ago you can carry grudges or you can move on, I don't waste my time on that.

Again, it's past her now and I hope she does well representing her district.

(12,939 posts)How exactly ought we choose who runs on our ballot line?

(53,726 posts)from the repugsusing money, resources and efforts to get Democrats in office so we would have at least one branch of government to blunt trump.
In the just recently passed election the blue wave was successful, thank God.
The Justice Democrats and Our Revolution worked to defeat other Dems when the real fight, IMO, should've been working to defeat the trump/white supremacy/fascist cabal.
Not that complicated. I don't know why it wasn't grasped. We might have had an even bigger blue wave if they had used their resources to work against repugs in the most important election in decades for our democracy. If the repugs had won the House trump and the repugs would be voting in fascism measures right now

(12,939 posts)on the Democratic ballot. Do we have primaries or not?

(12,939 posts)No thanks. I prefer democracy.

(53,726 posts)the threat posed by the trump/white supremacy/fascist cabal?
Incumbents, proven winners, had the best chance to win against repugs. So do the math, even if a Justice Dem or an Our Revolution candidate beat an incumbent Dem and then won the general election, that still wouldn't have gotten us closer to winning the majority in the House as that would just replace one Democrat for another without gaining a seat. However, if resources, money and effort was arrayed against an incumbent repug successfully, then we gain a seat in the House.
2018 was critical against the trump/white supremacy/fascist cabal. It was all about the bigger picture and the math, and the survival of our democracy, which seems important to you.
Sometimes the bigger picture of insuring we gained the House majority is more important than than one Dem running to unseat another. If the repugs had won the House they'd be ramming through fascist policies right now, Mueller would be out and we couldn't stop them.

(12,939 posts)As I believe in representative democracy. Primaries are how we decide who runs on our ballot slots. There is nothing wrong, and in fact everything right with robust primary campaigns.
