‘Death is waiting for him’

On the day he pleaded for his life in federal immigration court, Santos Chirino lifted his shirt and showed his scars.

Judge Thomas Snow watched the middle-aged construction worker on a big-screen television in Arlington, Va., 170 miles away from the immigration jail where Chirino was being held.

In a shaky voice, Chirino described the MS-13 gang attack that had nearly killed him, his decision to testify against the assailants in a Northern Virginia courtroom and the threats that came next. His brother’s windshield, smashed. Strangers snapping their photos at a restaurant. A gang member who said they were waiting for him in Honduras.

“I’m sure they are going to kill me,” Chirino, a married father of two teenagers, told the judge.

Nearly a year after he was deported, his 18-year-old daughter and 19-year-old son arrived in the Arlington immigration court for their own asylum hearing. They were accompanied by their father’s lawyer, Benjamin Osorio.

“Your honor, this is a difficult case,” Osorio told Judge John Bryant, asking to speed the process. “I represented their father, Santos Chirino Cruz. . . . I lost the case in this courtroom . . . . He was murdered in April.”

1. We need to obliterate borders and let people live where they can.

This will happen in any case since the flow of humanity will continue as long as we are still on this planet.

Better to help immigrants and make society and resources more welcoming than to try to artificially limit some living in "our" neighborhoods.

Take all those expenditures on militarizing borders and make them into compassionate centers of welcome.

2. Frederick Douglass said that anyone should be able to go anywhere their feet can take them. Thats

A rough quote. I couldn’t agree more. Borders are superficial boundaries, barriers or limitations. The whole planet belongs to the whole of the human race.

3. The US broke Honduras and Guatemala, we need to fix that hell.

It was our exploitation of their resources, our propping up of murderous dictators, and our appetite for drugs that destroyed these countries. We need to implement a central American Marshall Plan to stabilize these countries and make them livable. Until we do, we should grant all asylum applications from those countries. That father's blood is on the US hands.

8. There was a time in this country when it was the rule

that the government NEVER deported or extradited anyone if there was even a possibility that it would result in a death sentence. Not that trmpie or Thomas Homan or John Kelly or Kristjen Nielson or Stephen Miller gives a shit about that.

It sickens me that this country now sees the lives of others as so much cheap baggage.
