Trump Administration Proposes Ending Most Protections for Nearly 300 Threatened Species

Rule Would Eliminate 40-year-old Protective Framework in Major Gift to Polluters

WASHINGTON— The U.S. Department of the Interior quietly sent a proposed rule to the White House on Monday that would effectively rescind most protections for nearly 300 species designated as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

The rule targets about 70 species in California, another 20 in Hawaii, and scores more fish, birds, mammals and plants around the country. They include southern sea otters, northern spotted owls, piping plovers, red knots, Yosemite toads, delta smelt, Santa Catalina Island foxes and gopher tortoises. (A full list is available on request).

Monday’s proposal would rescind a crucial 40-year-old rule.
In 1975 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service enacted a rule granting threatened species the same level of protection as endangered species; only if the Service determined that fewer protections were warranted could protections be relaxed.

“The Trump administration just issued a death sentence to nearly 300 threatened species,” said Noah Greenwald, endangered species director at the Center for Biological Diversity.

3. Yup. When they've killed off every protection, they're free to mine & drill

..wherever they want, and there'll be nothing left to prevent them from doing so.

No further laws of protection will be necessary, because everything..will..be..dead.

Must have been listed somewhere in the really, really fine print of their party platform.

Stein wasn't dining at Vlad's table advocating for the little Northern Spotted Owl was she.

Green Party are LIARS.

environmental advocacy groups like the Natural Resources Defense Council, The Nature Conservancy, Earth Justice, National Wildlife Federation, etc.

They all have a long history of working to hold federal and State agencies accountable for implementing the intent of federal conservation laws.

Fight Trumpism attacks on the environment with your money via the courts now, with activism (engage in an environmental group's activities) now, and at the ballot box next/later.

think there's some room to better reflect socio-economic effects of ESA designations and species recovery plans, a carte Blanche change to a fundamental rule like this one is nothing more than an intentional undermining of the basic purpose of the ESA.

This will get widely challenged in the courts I am sure.
