Trump channels Stalin: Don't stop applauding

Donald Trump apparently reads no books. nor is he versed on the U.S. Constitution or Declaration of Independence, nor details of his own tax legislation.

In an Ohio speech on Monday, however, Trump brought to mind a famous scene from Alexander Solzhenitsyn's literary masterpiece "The Gulag Archipelago," his account of Stalin's prison camps to which innocent people were sent and millions died.

Trump used a campaign-style rally to level the accusation of treason against Democratic members of Congress who did not applaud his State of the Union speech last week.

Chills will travel down your spine, and blood will leave your face, but listen to Trump's words:

"Even on positive news, really positive news, they were like death . . . and un-American, un-American. Somebody said treasonous. Can we call that treason? Why not? They certainly didn't seem to love our country very much."

The demand to be adored is a signature of the despot. Staff, collaborators, followers, audiences -- all exist to be cheering sections.
In "Gulag," Solzhenitsyn tells of a speech by Joseph Stalin in which the dictator talked to a 1937 Communist Party congress. The speech ended amidst a call to acclaim the leader. Applause went on for 6 minutes, 7 minutes, nobody wanting to be the first to stop.

At 11 minutes, the director of a paper factory -- "an independent and strong man" -- decided that enough was enough, and sat down.

The NKVD came for him that night. The factory director was arrested and sent to the gulag for 10 years. As he signed the "confession" ending his interrogation, the man was advised: "Don't ever be the first to stop applauding."

1. I think Mr Trump channels Mr Stalin more often than he channels Mr Hitler...

... Mr Stalin, after all, was the "great leader" for a much longer time than Mr Hitler, and his willingness to twist facts, distort, lie, and re-write history as it happened much more prominent. Mr Hitler suffered from fact-denying dementia for only a couple of years; it is the norm for Mr Trump (as it was for Mr Stalin).
