James Comey under fire

David J Lynch in Washington

... “This story is not about Hillary Clinton; it’s about Jim Comey,” said Nick Ackerman, a former assistant special prosecutor in the Watergate scandal and now a partner at Dorsey & Whitney LLP in New York.

For Mr Comey, 55, who cultivates an image of non-partisan rectitude, the current imbroglio is ironic. What began this summer as an effort to safeguard the bureau’s credibility has instead exposed the FBI director to withering criticism from both sides of the political aisle.

Accused first by Republicans of letting Mrs Clinton off too easily with his July conclusion that she should not face criminal charges, he is now being savaged by Democrats for violating a long standing Department of Justice prohibition on taking law enforcement actions near an election ...

“This guy should not be director of the FBI,” said Ackerman. “He should be canned.”
