"RatF**ked: The True Story Behind The Secret Plan To Steal America's Democracy"

Fresh Air (NPR)
June 15, 2016

Fresh Air's Dave Davies today interviewed Salon's editor-in-chief David Daley who has a new book that he says began with a simple question:
When President Obama won re-election in 2012 and the Democratic tide gave the party a big majority in the Senate, why did the House of Representatives remain firmly in Republican hands?
The result was even more striking since voters cast 1.3 million more ballots for Democratic House candidates than Republican ones.

The answer, Daley decided, was effective gerrymandering of House districts following the 2010 census.
And it's state legislatures that draw most of the Congressional districts across the country.
The result of Daley's research is his new book, which details an effort by Republican strategists to put money and campaign resources into targeted state legislative races in key states in 2010, so Republicans could control the statehouses and control congressional redistricting.
Daley's book is titled: "Rat-Fucked: The True Story Behind The Secret Plan To Steal America's Democracy."

DAVIES:
"Well, David Daley, welcome to FRESH AIR...You know it's interesting to know that Republican control of Congress kind of feels like an ironclad reality of politics these days.
But, you know, you remind us that in the election of 2008, when Barack Obama took the White House, the Congressional picture was very different.
Remind us of that election and where the Republican Party stood not so long ago."

DAVID DALEY:
"If you go back and watch the tapes from election night, the smartest minds in the Republican Party are despairing on television.
They are trying to understand where all the Republican voters went.
The Republicans realized that they were staring down a demographic tidal wave, that the nature of the electorate was changing and the Democrats were talking about a coalition of the ascendant and looking at a decade of changing politics.
The Democrats took a super majority in the Senate - we forget - and how quickly it all changed."

DAVIES: "Right. The Democrats then had a 60-plus-seat majority in the House of Representatives
And you write about a Republican strategist named Chris Jankowski.
Tell us about him and what he saw as a way back."

1. The very reason the House won't swing by much before the 2022 mid-terms.

Even with a Democrat majority in the Senate, a Democrat in the WH, and a Democrat appointed majority in the SCOTUS, the 2020 census be the end of those districts.

4. To me, it seems to be another case when a complacent DNC was caught flat-footed

The republicans have been pushing for the US to be a one-party state since the late 90's(not that they were that interested in sharing power before). The Democratic Party is nearly always surprised by the republicans using every means at their disposal to grab and hold onto power. Just like the FL voter list purge and "caging" in the 2000 election (which the DNC didn't see coming, and actually enabled by certifying the FL vote counts).

The thing I fear the most is that they will not develop any plan whatsoever until 2-3 months before the 2020 census.

7. dem voters care more about dem pols winning than pols themselves

Pols can get jobs as lobbyists if they lose and policies GOP enacts won't effect them personally like the rest of us

5. That was an awesome interview.

In desperation, the Thugs found a way to hold onto power for 10 years by manipulating state governemnt elections and the resulting redraw of the districts. This year is critical that we dump Trump and 2020 even more so. Berniebros need to get on board to support Hillary and Dems up and down the ticket.

11. Hillarysis

You need to get on board and stop insulting Bernie supporters with the slur 'Berniebros'.

It's wrong and hurts Hillary. You are driving voters away from her.

13. What's wrong with the term "Berniebros"?

I'm a Sanders supporter, and I don't consider it to be a "slur"

Did you read or listen to the Fresh Air interview with David Daley?

17. Berniebros

I spent too long on dailykos where the term "berniebros" is always used as a slur. It's a claim that Bernie supporters are young white males who are misogynistic and want to destroy the Democratic Party and are against women and non-white people.

19. "It's a claim that Bernie supporters are young white males who are misogynistic and want to

.destroy the Democratic Party and are against women and non-white people."??

Do you have a verifiable source for this?

Also, you never answered my question to you:
"Did you read or listen to the David Daley interview?"

Many posts on dailykos, as I said.

Your question: Not that I remember.

21. 'Many posts on dailykos, as I said"

Well, if that's the case, then how hard would it be for you to list just ONE link to even ONE post?

Also, the fact that you apparently didn't bother to read any of the Fresh Air interview with
David Daley, which is what this OP is about, shows how little you care about this subject.

22. nope

First, it wouldn't be that hard. But why would I with the tone of your post? That assumed I care what you think on the issue.

I care what most think, but that tone makes me not feel an importance for your response.

And no, not reading some interview you think is important doesn't show the importance of a subject to me. I didn't even realize you were talking to me about it until you claimed I didn't answer whether I'd seen it.

Again, if you had presented it somewhat courteously, I'd look at it. But just saying 'go watch this or you don't care about the issue'...

Have a good day.

We, as Democrats, won't be able to "clean up the Congress" until we address the issue of GOP gerrymandering the Congressional districts by taking over state legislatures.
