Short sci-fi recommendation

"Energia" by Michael Centra

It's a bit of a weird ride at first because it's wrapped in a short work of science fiction and it's mostly in interview format, which is not a traditionally accepted structure for fiction.

But once you get to the sections dealing with economics, more precisely his theory of individual versus social economics, his treatment of the traditional concept of masculinity as basically junk leftover from a more prehistoric competitive environment, his approach to land management under a resource based economy and how he sees land as economically neutral ...I have never seen anyone attack capitalism, traditional masculinity, strict constitutionalists and approach the distribution of property from these angles.

It's not an academic approach, as it is fiction, but it's something definitely new and refreshing and provides new ways to think about different debates liberals tend to fight over with conservatives.

The ending is quite unexpected if albeit "tacked on" as an afterthought. There's actually two endings (which I won't reveal) and you get to choose between them.

Plus the author likes to retweet a lot of DU threads so that also works in his favor.
