And timely. August 31, 2001 WEVD went off the air in NYC. The radio station was created in Debs' memory (Eugene Victor Debs) in 1927. While there was some minimal brokered programming, the station at the end carried very politically progressive talk radio programs that rivaled the rightwing talk shows. On the last day of broadcasting, it was mostly senior citizens who called in to say goodbye and how sorry they were to lose the station.

There's a commemorative brick dedicated to WEVD at the American Labor Museum in Haledon, NJ, partly for the station and partly because Debs once gave a rousing speech to striking silk factory strikers from the second story of the museum.
