The touching hug photo from Ferguson protests is a blatant lie
12/2/2014
The camera is a superb liar. It only shows one moment, and has no obligation to explain the bigger picture behind it. The selective use of photographs can therefore replace truth with whatever visual detail we choose to fix on. Horror or schmaltz, the effect is the same, to simplify reality and turn a story into a deceptively straightforward image.
In the 1930s and 1940s the dishonest manipulation of photographs was a speciality of state propagandists. Backroom technicians in totalitarian darkrooms removed unwanted faces from pictures and turned emotive images into posters. Today, we dont need propaganda machines to deceive us because we can make hypocritical and self-manipulating choices ourselves just by liking the pictures that show us what we want to see and ignoring those that are more awkward.
The protests in America against a grand jurys decision not to indict white police officer Darren Wilson for shooting dead unarmed black teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, have thrown up a sickly sweet instance of this modern dishonesty.
Of all the disturbing images of streets on fire and crowds unappeased that have seethed since the grand jury decision in Ferguson set off protests across America, one of the most popular online turns out to be a touching moment of interracial togetherness. You heard me. Like a supermarket Christmas ad, this photograph taken at a Ferguson protest in Portland, Oregon, feasts on a moment of truce and peace amid the anger.

(68,644 posts)That it was a fleeting moment doesn't detract from the greater picture, the utter brutality that is meted out to citizens every day in America.
But shit, let us have this one moment to show that within the mess of protests and wars and riots there are human moments of love and understanding.
Shame on the author for trying to diminish the most important piece of our humanity.
Thank you SKP...well said.

(20,491 posts)like a staged pic or something.
This is a true pic if it was true between these two individuals, which is the way it was "advertised". I and no other sane person would possibly conceive this to be the state of race relations in the entire country. If it is a staged pic produce your evidence.
If a single instant of healing emotion, however fleeting, irritates you...well, you got your own problems brother.

(23,946 posts)"Liking this picture as a definitive image of Americas race crisis is the equivalent of locking yourself in and turning up the volume to weep at Frozen while the streets are burning outside. Which is exactly what white Americans apparently want to do. Truth is a flimsy thing. It can be destroyed by a hug."
I agree.

(68,644 posts)Anyone who took it to literally mean there are no problems is a fool.
And anyone who thinks that the photo is therefore a lie has a strange and sad way of looking at things.
The article is a sorry attempt to be noble, or righteously outraged.
Fuck that shit and bless that officer and child, and good for them.
I'm still smiling about that moment.

Actually reading the article is thougt provoking, but some do not have the time to bother with thought, the rush to righteous and outraged judgment is compelling on the inter-tubes.

(19,370 posts)What utter drivel. It's a tender moment and no one except this hack is trying to make it more than it is.

(6,419 posts)No, it's another image to focus on to remind us that there are many aspects of reality. The wanker author is supposed to be an arts writer, but he seems utterly useless in understanding the power of images.
More evidence of that:

(23,946 posts)going to assume that was your best effort.

(6,419 posts)BTW, is it a coincidence that on other threads you're a Putin apologist, and on this one you seize on an opportunity to deny there can be anything good about the USA? Hmmm yeah probably just a coincidence

(30,099 posts)The Staten Island grand jury investigating the death of New Yorks Eric Garner an asthmatic man who died after being held in a police chokehold has declined to issue any indictment of Daniel Pantaleo, the officer involved.
The New York Post reported Wednesday afternoon that the officers involved with the incident have been cleared of charges.
Garner, 47, was accosted by police on July 17 and accused of illegally selling cigarettes. In video of the incident, officers were observed placing Garner in a chokehold to subdue him.
While in the chokehold, Garner, who had asthma, repeatedly told officers he was unable to breathe. After more than 7 minutes with no air, Garner had a heart attack. He died in the ambulance on the way to medical help.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) Protesters gathered around the city late Wednesday afternoon into the evening, following a decision by a grand jury not to indict an NYPD officer involved in the apparent chokehold death of Eric Garner.
Protests were being held during the evening rush at Grand Central Station, in Times Square, and on Staten Island, where the Garner incident happened. Some protesters said they planned to disrupt the Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Rockefeller Center between 7 and 9 p.m., CBS2s Tony Aiello reported.

(12,799 posts)I expected to see a far less troubling photo. The beauty of art; the eye of the beholder. In context, I imagine the cop is really squeezing breath from the lungs of the tearful young man. Jonathan sees soppy where I perceive sinister.
