Pipeline breach spills oil into Yellowstone River

Source: Billings Gazette

HELENA — A spokesman for Gov. Steve Bullock says there has been an oil pipeline breach that spilled into the Yellowstone River near Glendive.

Spokesman Dave Parker says the Bridger Pipeline Co. spill occurred Saturday night. He says the initial estimate is that 1,200 barrels spilled. That's about 50,000 gallons.

Parker says some of the oil did get into the water but the area where it spilled was frozen over and that could help reduce the impact. He says he is unaware of any threats to public safety or health.

a spill is what happens when your coffee cup overturns. These are breaches and leaks in pipelines. How many people would put up with their coffee maker leaking all over their countertops?

I live in the state, fortunately in the western part, far from that mess... but then, I wonder about the water quality east of Billings and beyond given the Bakken oil play and all the stuff finding its way onto the Missouri via the Yellowstone and the upper Missouri.

The biosphere is going, going...

It should dilute enough by the time the reports are finished that there will be a minimal cleanup effort.

Gotta love the efficiency and accountability of our self regulated private companies.

(I'm flying out to start the new job tomorrow, and feel SO Lucky, grateful, and excited and Glad I don't have to put up with the privateer's nonsense)

Why can't the USA become number one in something good for a change?

for example, why can't we become the world's leader in manufacturing solar panels?

US corporate tax loopholes have enabled many multi-billion dollar corporations to actually MAKE money by CLOSING factories, firing the workers, and moving overseas, where labor is cheap.

That's one reason why there are so many Americans who can't find decent, well-paying jobs these days....The loss of so many manufacturing jobs.

How about offering tax breaks for corporations to open solar cell factories, wind turbine factories, and other green technology factories?

Why can't the United States become the "green technology manufacturer" for the world?

(God knows we NEED to create new manufacturing jobs here).

and I agree;
however, the fact remains, the USA was once the manufacturing capital of the world; and it can become so again.

Obama wants to "create jobs", right?

Even the Republicans agree that we need to "create jobs". and have said that "jobs" are one of their priorities.

So, why can't we "create jobs" manufacturing green technology?
....Solar panels, wind turbines, re-chargeable hydrogen batteries etc

If President Obama wanted to press the GOP on creating "green jobs", my guess is that the American people would support him.

for lots of jobs. Manufacturing has changed worldwide, for lots of reasons, and this is one of the changes we should embrace and take advantage of.

So the impact wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Don't see where they cleaned it up. Does he think it will remain frozen? Since it hit 37 degrees there today, I doubt the river remained frozen.

Yep, he's unaware. They're still cleaning up from the 2011 spill. 85 miles of riverfront with that one.

I hate big oil.

A resident near Glendive expressed worry about this the last time around. The Exxon spill in the Yellowstone River back in July 2011 turned out to be heavy crude (i.e. tar sands) which is harder to clean up and more toxic.

Note that the previous governor, Brian Schweitzer, and the current governor, Steve Bullock, both Democrats, favor the Keystone XL pipeline.
