Feds: Man said he was Jesus, Boehner was the devil

DEER PARK, Ohio - Ebola, evil voices and the devil.
Those are just a few of the things a Butler County bartender cited as reasons he was going to kill House Speaker John Boehner this past fall, federal agents said.
Michael Robert Hoyt, 44, was indicted Jan. 7 on charges of threatening to murder the congressman in a plot authorities said included poisoning his drink at a country club.
Hoyt served drinks to Boehner for more than five years at the Wetherington Country Club in West Chester and was known as Bartender Mike to employees there.

Jail: evidence of our culture's compassion toward mental illness.

(29,322 posts)He's known him for 5 years, he was fired this year. It helps to understand everything, even the logic behind the delusions. The tricky thing is reality & psychosis overlaps ah it is hard to describe but the person that knows best what he is seeing, hearing, thinking and how much of that pertains to reality and how much pertains to the delusions, voices, and don't know if he sees things that aren't there is the person experiencing the delusions.
Compassion towards mental illness wouldn't help unless there was a clear understanding. Obviously if he hears something no one else hears you tell him it didn't exist. But if he tells you something you couldn't otherwise confirm you wouldn't say if it isn't real (unless it is something like a creature that doesn't exist like a flying dragon or something like that) because you weren't there either but even he gave an accurate intepretation it would still likely be doubted because of the psychosis. That kind of sickness sucks because reality & the psychosis happen at the same time. There is just a portion of that reality that only you are experiencing but the last thing anyone should ever assume is they lack intelligence. Is not that kind of mental illness.
They actually make the perfect victims since the do hear things, see things, & have delusions that aren't grounded in reality so if they make claims against you, no one would believe them. I would like to know his full story, I'd think I'd do a good job of weeding the fact from the fiction, just interested in how Boehner (both the reality & the delusional reasons) that sent him down the rabbit hole. It would go a long way in getting him the help he needs.

(110,913 posts)While once in a while it can be due to sleep deprivation on meth use, it's usually something you can't pin any person, place or thing on as causing it.
JonLP24
(29,322 posts)I understand it enough that if you ever experienced it you do more harm than good sharing that information when it could be simply two people are in a room, you hear something you know isn't real but you tell them anyways. You told them truth, you heard something. The sound didn't exist but you heard it. That person's natural reaction is to doubt everything you say and think you're crazy for the rest of his/her life. It backfires.
Sleep deprivation is a good example actually, when you experience it do you know it isn't real as well? I know with psychosis it can seem so real which leads to convincing delusions.
The thing that sucks for him is no one is going to believe anything he has to say for the rest of his life which means he may be the perfect victim one day.

(110,913 posts)I've never told anybody that what they saw or heard wasn't real, of course it was real to them. I just told them what I could see and hear.
You're right, of course, and if you're not nuts when you go into a psychiatric hospital, they'll medicalize everything you say until you think you are.

(29,322 posts)wrong worker or wrong group of workers, chances are you're already mentally vulnerable. If a gaslighter (basically convincing someone they are experiencing psychosis when they really aren't) is working there your life is over, you're going to go through in my mind the cruelest form of a torture which will literally make you crazy and I can start crying thinking about it.
This is why I'm so quick to say don't doubt the crazies.
My point and I was trying to emphasize with that example is not denying he didn't hear it, its that he is intelligent enough to know that voice isn't real when he hears implying there are other things he knows is real or isn't (like him saying he was recently fired)

Other than that, based on his coloring, I'd say he's survived several attempts at poisoning, and his liver has probably built up quite an immunity.

(5,498 posts)There was a newspaper article prominently displayed in my Grandfather's bar which related the death of a man who never drank anything but alcohol until one day he took a drink of water and dropped dead. Coulda been a fake story, but it sold drinks.

(5,953 posts)try to drink the Russian cosmonauts under the table with Vodka. The castaways are secretly drinking water out of a Vodka bottle, and the Russians don't actually pass out until they take a swig of the water. I'm sure Boehner has the same metabolism.

(5,902 posts)Rather like Juan Perón's "exploding" car trunk (courtesy of special effects people in Argentine cinema who were friends with Evita), or Stalin's ongoing discoveries of "plots" against himself or his regime. While it's true that this kind of ploy is usually associated with autocrats, you might remember that a number of House Republicans were publicly accusing the president of planning the very thing (a staged attempt on his own life) shortly before the 2012 elections.
Perhaps Orange Man let the idea linger, and the timing is certainly fortuitous. As contrived as these particular "revelations" sound, I certainly wouldn't put it past him.

He knows something about Boehner more than the rest of us. It doesn't have to be Ebola, he does apply a lot of logic only the Ebola thing is out of left field, just because someone is crazy doesn't mean everything they say isn't credible.
Take the letter it is a reasonable that understands why they wouldn't want to go with him he just wanted go to safe place to have a discussion. Saying he hasn't lied or exaggerated right after admitting he could have poisoned him.
Hear me out, he tells you he heard the Devil's voice. All that means is he heard it. That is a truthful statement, psychosis and real life overlap but don't take it as anything else he says less credible because that is a credible statement.
The mentally ill often make perfect victims because no one will believe him because he is crazy, he describes what is likely a delusion but there is a thought process or appearance of events that leads to the delusion.
That ebola thing is the kicker, it seems the behavior of someone who knows he is crazy, knows everyone else knows who is crazy desperately wants to expose a sociopath but the Ebola thing loses the whole thing. I'd still hear him out because reality & psychosis overlap and happen at the same time. It is hard to explain if you haven't experienced it yourself. It certainly isn't something you want to admit to because everything else you may say will be doubted for simply being accurate in describing the psychosis reality. You can understand both at the same time.
The ebola thing is really off though. Just something about it, everything I can make sense of is ebola. I just see ebola, he wants to confront him over ebola, a note about ebola but the thing it lacks is an explanation why he feels he is responsible for bringing ebola and everything attributed comes from officers, agents, and a note and I can go down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole.
I'll just say it is odd.

(22,651 posts)I'd like to see the context of the 'threats' if indeed the 'threats' came from the FBI interview?
The man was told he was fired because of 'work complaints' from customers. He had a longterm medical issue and was under Doctors treatment. Looks to me on the surface the man was upset about losing his job and thought Boner was one of the customers who complained. So he sent an email (probably a dumb idea)to the one customer he thought would 'remember him'.
I guess Boehner turned the email over to the FBI.
Of course the FBI would visit and have one of their longgggg interviews, asking the man his thoughts about what he 'could have done' in his work position. So are the charges based on thoughts? or reality of an actual threat? The man has already lost access to Boehner when he lost his job.
The only positive is if the Feds toss him in Federal prison for a couple decades, he will probably get decent medical treatment.

(30,663 posts)however, I wonder what made him think Boehner is evil? Five years of exposure to Reality?
and no Boner jokes?
what, no "justifiable homicide?'"
no " What did he use, Agent Orange?"
no "That's no bartender--it's the exorcist!"
no "too bad Boner isn't Jesus, everybody would get foodstamps!"
no "hey, it's not the first time Boner has handled a Poison Pill!"
no "Obama did it!"
I could go on and on--if it weren't in such bad taste...
