Dick Cheney Would Torture Again

Source: Huffington Post

Dick Cheney gave an unflinching defense of he CIA's post-9/11 torture program on "Meet the Press" on Sunday, dismissing criticisms of the program's forced rectal feedings, waterboarding and deaths.

"It worked. It absolutely did work," said Cheney, a driving force behind the George W. Bush administration's use of harsh tactics in response to the 9/11 attacks.

The Senate report on the interrogation program details forced rectal feedings that were medically unnecessary. But on Sunday, Cheney said the feedings were done for "medical reasons." The former vice president showed little remorse for the dozens of prisoners who were found to have been wrongfully detained, for the man who died in the program, or for people like Khaled El-Masri -- a German citizen who was shipped off to Afghanistan and sodomized in a case of mistaken identity.

"I'd do it again in a minute," said Cheney. He also spoke repeatedly of how the program was justified to get the "bastards" who perpetrated the 9/11 attacks.

12. What does anyone expect?

The guy is focused on two things only - keeping his ass out of prison and doing what he can to prevent his perceived legacy to be one of a rotten, evil, traitorous bastard. His BS makes it possible for a lot of people (how many Americans still believe that Saddam Hussein had something to do with 9/11?) to maintain the perspective that we had the right, and the necessity, to do what we had to do to them.

No one should expect anything resembling truth from Cheney, Rumsfeld, and the PNAC gang. They know that 'truth' would eventually land some of the bastards in prison. That's what keeps Cheney on the BS offensive - his positions are indefensible legally and morally, but as long as he keeps telling everyone that's crap and implies that the current administration should be committed to torture, etc., he keeps the truth from looking as bad as it is to the people most likely to believe him.

The only bright spot is that he won't be flying first class to nearly anywhere outside the U.S. borders. The rest of the civilized world has his number. Having no shame, he probably doesn't care. The despotic countries that would have him, however, probably aren't much fun to visit.

23. That's the best question anyone's asked in this thread.

The answer is, unfortunately, never. No form of American 'press' that relies on lots of corporate advertising revenue will ever squarely ask questions like:

how did this son of a bitch take advantage of a post 9/11 traumatized citizenry to launch at least one major, disastrous war that was completely unrelated to the traumatic event?

what were the real purposes of the Iraq war?

what was it like being the ('Vice?' - hm...) President who failed to stop the worst non-state act of foreign terrorism on US soil, even though there was plenty of available information to put it all together and prevent it?

Does the process of inventing false 'intelligence' to justify a war, then lying continuously to the American people using that intelligence, constitute a crime against the nation? If so, what is the crime?

What were the true purposes of brutally torturing people who may or may not have had anything to do with the aforementioned terrorist attack?

Nope - the corporate-sponsored media, which is what most Americans rely on for 'news' (I know lots of people who accept the very concept of 'the news' to be crimes and punishment, occasional cute stories, sports coverage and weather forecasts), will never ask such questions. They have nothing to gain.

6. I heard remarks this morning of how two different people could read a report and come

away with one thinking it torture and the other does not. I would like to refer those claiming it is not torture to study the Geneva Convention and see what is classified as torture. I don't see how the US has an out on declaring "we needed to do this after the 9/11 attacks", those like Cheney would climb a tree and tell a like when the truth sounds better on the ground. Water boarding is torture, plain and simple, Cheney needs to get it together.

34. And history will record him alongside Eichmann. The banality of evil.

Although six psychiatrists testified during the trial to Eichmann’s apparent “normality,” in her articles Arendt emphasizes the fact that his normalcy is only a mask. In fact, she highlights the aspects of his behavior under questioning that were anything but normal: his self-contradictions, lies, evasiveness, denial of blame about the crimes he did commit and inappropriate boasting about his power and role in the Holocaust for crimes there’s no evidence he committed. Arendt is particularly struck by this man’s absolute lack of empathy and remorse for having sent hundreds of thousands of people to their deaths. To each count he was charged with, Eichmann pleaded “Not guilty in the sense of the indictment.” (p. 21) This leads Arendt to ask: “In what sense then did he think he was guilty?” (p. 21) His defense attorney claimed that “Eichmann feels guilty before God, not before the law,” but Arendt points out that Eichmann himself never acknowledges any such moral culpability.

So does anyone know of any action being taken to prosecute anyone for war crimes; or the crime of taking all of America to war for the self interests of those in the Administration?

I have found a petition on the ACLU website to request that Eric Holder have the Justice Dept appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Bush administration war crimes, but this seems lame. Does anyone know of any upcoming protest marches, billboard campaigns, other actions which could help in the advancement of ensuring that these crimes are not forgotten in a week?

10. There is another problem with torture that seldom gets discussed directly.

The power to decide who gets tortured inevitably gets abused. It is similar to "mission creep" I would think. The checks and controls on who it is administered to and under what circumstances, if they existed at all, are secret and therefore untenable. Is there a "test" which must be met before someone is tortured? What steps are taken to make sure that you don't "sodomize" the wrong prisoner? How do you screen the ones to be doing the torture? I don't think that they did, they just found the most sick, twisted, bastards they could find readily available.
This is just part of the reasons why torture should never happen!

I'm thinking it was all about getting false confessions to links between Al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein so they could initiate the Big Plan to remake the Middle East, starting with Iraq.

39. The taxpayers have spent millions keeping Cheney alive. It is time he goes before the court and be

charged for war crimes and a traitor. He and Bush lied to the American people, When will they pay for those LIES. Now we have the Republicans back in control of the nation, and we see just what there agenda is for the next 2 years. Destroy the middle class as the Koch brothers have wanted. Wall Street and the banks are now being protected by the tax payers while they make tens of billions. Didn't the economic crash of 2008 wake up anyone? Is everyone so stupid as to elect the GOP who only mission is to destroy us and the nation. They have sold out to Wall Street, big banks, corporations and yes the Koch brothers.
Once the middle class is destroyed where will the revenue and profits be made, The middle class makes up most of that.

So the USA is on it death route with the GOP whipping us to destruction

Uggggggh. What a bunch. I am in a bad mood today anyway and when I think about Cheney being elected by the so-called "Christian" right, I just don't know how to react.

He is the most unChristian being to claim to be a member off the human race. It's unbelievable that the Christian right votes for Republicans. It is a denial of everything that is good in their faith. Just unbelievable.

When I think about how the Christian Right supports people like Cheney, I understand why there are so many atheists and why the numbers of the atheists are growing so rapidly.

Where is the charity? Where is the love that knows no bounds? Where is the forgiveness? Where is the kindness? Certainly not with Cheney or any self-styled Christian who votes Republican.

45. BTW...is there such a thing as "rectal feeding"?

I've never heard of it or seen it done in a hospital.

I can only assume the "feeding" was to inject hot chili stuff, chemicals, stuff that would solidify...anything that would drive the person wild in pain and agony.

And if they kept injecting, injecting, injecting...how many may have actually died from ruptured intestines?

It takes some special sick, perverted freaks to do this...the ones that created it, ordered it and did it should all be identified and arrested...talk about crimes against humanity!

52. Yep. I've been wondering about that too. Between the rectum and the stomach

are "miles" of twisted intestines and other organs. How could that possibly be excused to anyone with elementary school biology as "forced feeding or hydration? Yet, like most people, I've been sitting around saying "That's terrible," and thinking of it as a really bad enema. But wait! It makes no sense and has no justification.

68. Feeding, no. Hydration, yes.

Anyone with a basic understanding of biology should know that the main source of absorbing water into the body is the large intestine.

Hydration OCCURS in the the large intestine.

That said, the CIA's use was torture.

73. An IV for hydration...not a hose up an ass for fluids.

I'll lay odds, that if these prisoners were being starved and liquids withheld, that if offered safe/clean water they would have desperately taken it.

I doubt that the torture doctors would have determined that they were dehydrated and then decided to give them fluids, up their butt.

And speaking of all this, most likely they would have been striped naked, strapped down to a table, maybe with stirrups (ladies!) and then "they" would have had to PRY the guy's rectum open, in order to force the tube inside of him. Speaking of that tube...tube or HOSE? And lube? Men...how do you like that 15 second prostrate check during a physical? Think of that.

I'm trying and hoping to paint a better picture...yes, for the shocking horror that it is. Anyone, ANYONE that agrees with these tactics, is sick.

I do believe that they probably looked at the sick activities that the Nazis or Saddam Hussien (had men suspended by their testicles) did to men.

This whole thing remains "sanitized" in the media and Capital.

79. I was correcting your "basic biology" error.

"Between the rectum and the stomach are "miles" of twisted intestines and other organs. How could that possibly be excused to anyone with elementary school biology as "forced feeding or hydration?"

The human intestines average about 25 feet in length, far short of the "miles" you cite. Normal hydration occurs in the large intestine, how the water gets there does not particularly matter. I'm not saying it SHOULD be done, just that it CAN be done, contrary to your claims.

The CIA was using it for torture, no doubts. An IV would be the first choice. But claiming that it is not possible to hydrate in the large intestine demonstrates a profound lack of understanding of basic physiology. Hydration via the large intestine is why we don't shrivel and desiccate.

53. It's not even physiologically possible.

There are no digestive enzymes down there, nor a direct portal system to the liver (your body's own chemical processing plant). Doctors who need to force-feed someone have other means (IV or tube feedings) to do that.

It's total, evil bullshit believed only by the willfully stupid.
