Karen Lewis will not run for Chicago mayor

Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis will not pursue a bid for Chicago mayor, the coordinator of the committee that was exploring a run announced Monday.
Lewis, 61, had been seen as a potentially strong challenger to Mayor Rahm Emanuel in the February election. Her series of speaking engagements around the city was interrupted last week when she was hospitalized after becoming sick at home. Union officials said she underwent surgery and was suffering from a serious illness, but have provided few other details about what is wrong with her.
In addition to forming an exploratory committee and touring the city on a "listening tour," the firebrand union leader had begun fundraising in anticipation of a possible run.
Lewis contributed $40,000 of her own money to her political fund, which she said would go toward opening a campaign office and hiring staff.
