Report: Ted Cruz Getting Ready To Run For President In 2016
Source: National Journal/This Week Magazine
First-term Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is preparing to run for president in 2016, with an announcement from the Tea Party star possibly coming at the end of this year. "At this point it's 90/10 he's in," a Cruz adviser told National Journal. "And honestly, 90 is lowballing it."
The focus for a presidential campaign could end up being foreign policy, with Cruz positioning himself against his potential rival, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, who is known for advocating a more non-interventionist approach.
"Is it true that the American people are war-weary? Absolutely," Cruz told the magazine. "We are tired of sending our sons and daughters to distant lands year after year after year, to give their lives trying to transform foreign nations. But I think it's a serious misreading of the American people to conclude that we are unwilling to defend ourselves, that we are unwilling to be strong and vigorous defending U.S. national security."

(14,255 posts)Cruz had American citizenship at birth because his mother is an American citizen.

But the Supreme Court -- the ultimate arbiter of constitutional questions -- has never ruled on the matter. And that means a note of uncertainty remains.
Sarah H. Duggin, a professor of law at Catholic University, has written about and studied the issue extensively. She told us in 2008 that the question of natural born citizenship is "one of the most deceptively simple, complex issues."
We reached her again this week to ask about Cruzs eligibility. "It would be reasonable to interpret the Constitutions natural born citizenship provision to include children born abroad to U.S. citizens, including Senator Cruz, for a number of reasons," she said.
But is it 100 percent sure?
"Unfortunately, we cannot say for sure without either a definitive Supreme Court ruling, or an amendment to clarify the Constitution."
I would not bet on our current SCOTUS to rule against anyone for the GOP.

US grants citizenship by both jus soli and jus sanguinis and both are considered "natural born."

(5,730 posts)still going on and on about Obama supposedly being born outside of Hawaii. I asked about why it was, then, all right for McCain to run against him, having been born in Panama, or Ted Cruz wanting to run for president, having been born in Canada? The situations all involved a mother who was a U.S. citizen and were exactly the same (except, of course, for Obama actually being born in the U.S.A.) I put the question out on Facebook for quite a while and finally got ONE response. The respondent said, "Well, I'm not sure, but I think it was something about how young his mother was when she left the country and how long she was gone."
To quote Ron White, "There's no cure for stupid."

(11,014 posts)but didn't have the guts to say it.
Every criticism of Obama boils down to his race which the wingnuts and teabaggers cannot put their head around.
I argued with wingnuts that even if Obama was born in Kenya or the moon, as long as his mother was a US Citizen, he is a natural born US citizen - to no avail.

(5,519 posts)What a coincidence. They have been birthering on about Obama, but when one of their own is running...
will they "overlook" the foreign birth or foreign father? At least the President WAS BORN IN AMERICA.
Where's the birth certificate, Mr. Cruz? No, that looks like a fake copy. ETC.
