Records: Gov. Nixon kept routine after shooting

Source: AP

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon was flying out of St. Louis around noon on Aug. 9, about the same time as a white policeman was fatally shooting an unarmed black 18-year-old a couple of miles from where Nixon had just delivered a college commencement speech.

By the next night, rioting and looting had erupted in Ferguson, where Michael Brown was killed. Since then, questions have been raised about whether the governor should have responded faster to an increasingly chaotic and racially tense situation that focused the eyes of the nation on the St. Louis suburb.

Copies of Nixon's daily schedule provided upon the request of The Associated Press show that the governor continued to go about his routine business for several days after the shooting, splitting his attention between the unrest in Ferguson and items such as announcing grants to preschools and visiting the State Fair.

Not until the fifth day after Brown's shooting, after continued clashes between police and protesters, did Nixon clear his schedule and devote his time fully to managing the crisis in Ferguson.

But even with an elected Democrat as governor, African Americans in Missouri have no one in government to look out for their rights.

The RW loons were criticizing Obama for golfing after the beheading videos came out. What was he supposed to be doing? Flying over to Iraq to single handedly take down the perpetrators responsible?

Did Gov Nixon do everything he should have/could have done to deal with the Ferguson situation? No, he could have handled it better. But continuing on a schedule that was probably planned months and months in advance is hardly a capital offence, IMO.

This is a ridiculous story, and even more ridiculous that it's in Late Breaking News.

It would be highly doubtful that the Governor was not kept up to date on the situation as it developed and a person elected to that office frankly has to be able to address more than one thing at a time.

There was a State Senator who criticized him for not being at "ground zero" from the beginning, but never was able to explain what he was supposed to do there.

He did come on the third day (The Monday after the shooting) to the NAACP meeting at the Murchison Tabernacle-CME Church on Natural Bridge Road (approx 5 miles from "ground zero.&quot As I stated at the time (and was attacked at DU for saying) the criticism reminded me of Ted Cruz's demand that Obama meet with Perry at the TX/MX border instead of Austin.

There are a lot of things to criticize Gov. Nixon for--including the handling of the Micheal Brown-shooting related incidents. As you said, this particular criticism is pretty mindless.

There are plenty of things to criticize JAy Nixon about. Geographic positioning is not one of them.

for African-Americans to be beaten up and shot by the police, I can see why Gov Nixon didn't get invested in this event. You know, "Oh, just another day in Amerika..."

from a ..............no surprise and my outrage is meaningless concerning this travesty because this .............couldn't have cared less until the world media showed up. Him showing up 5 days late? So transparent. Such an obvious political ploy. What can be expected though, it was just a state sanctioned, shot dead black laying in the street for hours, right govvie?
