Mills Police Department Officer Zachary Miller entered his plea on Friday, a month after drug-sniffing police dog "Nyx" died, the Casper Star Tribune reported.

Citing court filings, the paper reported that Miller left Nyx in his patrol car, parked outside the police station, with the windows rolled up.

Police dogs are prohibited from the Mills police station, the paper said.

If convicted of the misdemeanor charges, Miller faces up to six months in jail and a fine of $750, the paper reported.

Finally, a police officer is charged for a death, albeit not for the death of a human being.

3. In 2011, in a Western Pennsylvania city, a police dog died the same way.

A 60-day unpaid suspension resulted for the police officer who left the dog in the police car. I think that there may have been an issue as to whether the car's air conditioner was working properly. As I recall, for several hours, the car remained parked with its engine idling.

4. This is an outrage!

That poor dog. Just burning up and dying because his master is a slave to an administrative rule.

5. As a former Wyoming resident ...

... I'll tell you that there will indeed be much more outrage about this than there ever would be about a police officer shooting or beating an unarmed human being ... of any race.

(Although from various posts on Facebook and other social media I think this might be true everywhere in 21st century America -- I see a lot more empathy and sympathy and concern for pet dogs than I do for the plight of poor, suffering and oppressed people.)

9. "Police dogs are prohibited from the Mills police station, the paper said."

Now why is this? Because they might act irrationally (according to humans), based on their world view, and attack someone?

Sounds like the perfect argument for requiring body cameras on cops.

10. If you or I had done the same thing to the same dog

We'd be charged with the murder of a peace officer. What makes Officer Miller so special?

11. Thought police dogs were considered Officers.

Shouldn't the charge reflect the death of a Police Officer?
