At least 30 killed in Shi'ite militia attack on Sunni mosque in Iraq

Source: Reuters

At least 30 people were killed when a Shi'ite Muslim militia opened fired inside an Iraqi Sunni mosque in the country's eastern Diyala province on Friday, an Iraqi security source said.

The security source said at least 30 bodies had arrived at the hospital in the city of Baquba in Diyala province. Witnesses said the death toll from the attack was higher, but it was not immediately possible to verify the reports.

Such sectarian violence could hurt efforts by Iraq's new prime minister, moderate Shi'ite Haider al-Abadi, to form a government that can unite Iraqis against Islamic State, the Sunni militants who have seized large parts of the country.

Ambulances transported the bodies to the town of Baquba, the main town in Diyala province, where Iranian-trained Shi'ite militias are powerful and act with impunity.

Stay out of the way and let them destroy each other.

At first I was upset and thinking we had to do something. But the more I read, the more cynical I get, and the more I am thinking that, as hard as it is to watch, the world will be better off in the long run if the Sunni and the Shia destroy and bankrupt themselves while we pull out our people and assets.

And also why we shouldn't put ground combat troops back in. We can't fix the Sunni/Shia hatred.

Sunnis and Shiites lived in the same neighborhoods in Baghdad, and it was considered impolite to ask someone whether he was one or the other. That's according to the old River Bend blog.

Can you deny that?

Iraq Death Toll Reaches 500,000 Since Start Of U.S.-Led Invasion, New Study Says

Nearly half a million people have died from war-related causes in Iraq since the US-led invasion in 2003, according to an academic study published in the United States on Tuesday.

That toll is far higher than the nearly 115,000 violent civilian deaths reported by the British-based group Iraq Body Count, which bases its tally on media reports, hospital and morgue records, and official and non-governmental accounts.

The latest estimate by university researchers in the United States, Canada and Baghdad in cooperation with the Iraqi Ministry of Health covers not only violent deaths but other avoidable deaths linked to the invasion, insurgencies and subsequent social breakdown.
