Police turn to tear gas at Ferguson protests; curfew remains in place

Source: St. Louis Post Dispatch

Police fired tear gas on protesters in Ferguson shortly after 9 p.m., causing some to flee for safety.

The gas was fired at the southern end of the protest area, near Salway Avenue. Police told demonstrators "Get off the street now."

At about 8:30 p.m. Sunday, several shots were fired near West Florissant Avenue and Canfield Drive.

A short time later, a woman was taken away by ambulance about a block away. It is unclear whether the two events were related.

Last night the curfew was midnight to 5 am.

why are they shooting off tear gas ahead of curfew?
Why are they even being so aggressive and provocative?
Is this the cop's way of giving the finger to the Gov?

Not very surprising the cops react with greater force.

I thought the governor had relieved the local police.

I'm listening to MSNBC but all I'm hearing is the police, not which police.

Damn! It's an effing police state in Ferguson ... not even curfew time and the police departments is out there firing tear gas, smoke gas and sting balls.

It is my understanding that the state police are in command. But the local police are still on-scene. The difference now is that orders to the local police come from a state police official.

The state police can issue tactical orders (where a police unit is to go, etc.), but that will not much influence the 1-on-1 behavior of each individual cop.
