Plan unveiled to dismantle San Onofre

Source: San Diego Union-Tribune

Owners of the San Onofre nuclear plant on Friday made public for the first time a detailed road map for dismantling the site’s twin nuclear reactors and safeguarding highly radioactive waste.

Southern California Edison hopes to remove the plant, sandwiched in the 800-foot gap between Interstate-5 and the ocean 50 miles north of San Diego, and restore the Navy-owned property over the course of two decades.

The price tag — $4.4 billion — could distinguish San Onofre as the most expensive decommissioning in the 70 year history of the nuclear power industry.

So, even though San Onofre is shut down, it will still be a nuclear waste dump. From the article:

Spent nuclear fuel will remain indefinitely at San Onofre while the U.S. government comes up with a nationwide solution for storing the highly-radioactive waste. Under the decommissioning plan, spent fuel would be transferred from cooling pools to dry storage in reinforced steel canisters as soon as late 2019.

Yeah, we've heard that one before since the 1970's. Got Yucca Mt?

Yup, they have nowhere to take it.

There it will sit indefinitely, on one of the best surfing beaches in the world.

A nuclear plant dismantled at the end of its engineered life and before catastrophic failure! Imagine more of that....

I pass by it on the train every once in a while and it is far too close to the ocean.

I wonder just how much profit was made with this plant. I seriously doubt any was

Cheap, clean, safe, none of which was/is true concerning nuclear energy

The risk in these plants is the public's to bear. The profits are for the nuke companies. The revolving door has made this all possible for 40+ years.
