Powell maybe not told early about CIA techniques

Source: Associated Press

A Senate report on the CIA's interrogation and detention practices after the 9/11 attacks concludes that the agency initially kept the secretary of state and some U.S. ambassadors in the dark about harsh techniques and secret prisons, according to a document circulating among White House staff.

The Senate report, a summary of which is expected to be made public in the coming weeks, concludes that the CIA used brutal techniques on detainees that failed to produce life-saving intelligence, and then misled Congress and the Justice Department about the interrogation program.

Another question asked, "Doesn't the report make clear that at least some who authorized or participated in the RDI program committed crimes?" the document asks, referring to the program's formal internal name, the Rendition, Detention and Interrogation program. "Will the Justice Department revisit its decision not to prosecute anyone?"

10. According to his own accounts, Powell had Tenet sit behind him when Powell

gave his speech "to the UN" (USians were the real targets) because Powell wanted Tenet in camera range.

That tells me that Powell knew the intel was bullshit, gave the speech anyway, but had Tenet sit behind him so he (Powell) could point to Tenet if and when the intel hit the fan.

Polls had shown that Powell was the member of the Bush admin that USians trusted most on Iraq. That is why Powell was chosen to give that speech. We were the targets. UN member nations don't make decisions about whether to join the US in invading Iraq or not based on a televised speech.

It was a charade for consumption by USians in which Powell knowingly participated, which he was more than willing to do, as long as he could blame Tenet later, if necessary. Powell knew he had been chosen for that speech because of our trust and he bs'd us. Fuck everyone who died, got displaced, got maimed, etc. because of that war. Powell's concern when he gave that speech was making sure Tenet was in camera range, i.e., his own reputation, period.

because he'd either quit and/or go public. If it is true, then they pulled a fast one at his expense. Maybe we'll never know for sure.

Again, I'm not defending Powell. I'm saying it wouldn't surprise me if the Bush Administration lied to one of their own.

''...the CIA used brutal techniques on detainees that failed to produce life-saving intelligence....''

- And by implication if it doesn't fail to give that ''life-saving'' intelligence (WTFTI), we'll admit that it's barbaric and cruel -- but we'll forgive ourselves because: ''Life-Saving'' -- and move on.

This stuff was at least hinted at in all the papers, so not being officially told just doesn't cut it. If I'm SoS and it's floating about in the press that the CIA is committing atrocities, am I not going to ask questions? This sounds like, "But we had reason to believe they had WMD." Maybe you should have listened to your own weapons investigators. Start getting out of the bubble more.

Sheesh, pick up a Rolling Stone magazine now and then for starters. Act like a freakin' LEADER.

have been fired for total incompetence.

let us remember that this bastard was, in the early part of his career, instrumental in the attempted cover-up of MyLai. he has been a corrupt, lying bastard from the start.
