Trump Plaza set to close in Sept., N.J. officials

Source: Philadelphia Inquirer

ATLANTIC CITY - The list of casinos closing or soon to close here just grew by one. Trump Plaza will close its doors for good in mid-September, according to state officials who were briefed Friday by lawyers representing the casino.

"I believe Sept. 16 is the targeted closure date that we were told," said Assemblyman Vince Mazzeo (D., Atlantic). Mazzeo said both he and State Sen. Jim Whelan (D., Atlantic) received a phone call late Friday afternoon from a Trump Plaza lawyer.

Mazzeo said he was told by the attorney that Trump Plaza management plans to make a formal announcement and issue 60-day layoff notices to about 1,600 employees on Monday.

"This is another blow to the casino industry here," Mazzeo said in a phone interview. "With mid-September the timing of the closing, it will have a devastating impact on the local economy."

Both the Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods are in pretty rough shape themselves. Geriatrics pouring their social security checks into penny slot machines and eating the $9.99 buffet just aren't that lucrative. And neither Atlantic City or obviously the Indian casinos have sufficient airline service to attract major conventions or events. And Atlantic City is just plain disgusting and I'm pretty sure I didn't see any street walkers at the Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods

I worked on a major gaming project that is in the toilet, they basically stole marketing data from Las Vegas and went to investors saying that all the local gamblers who went to Vegas were easy pickings. But that doesn't even scratch the surface of what Las Vegas is today.

A BIG portion of the AC gambling business was people driving down from PA.

The state legalized gambling and allowed casinos to open throughout the state, one isolated area.

As these casinos have become established, AC has seen a MASSIVE drop in business.

And, as you noted, it is not a great place.

That said, in this case, could not happen to a more arrogant, smug jerkoff.

Casinos on the East Coast in particular are finding that they can't subsist on high rollers alone.

Casinos need gamblers, both low and high rollers. Gamblers need discretionary income. Weak economies don't produce enough discretionary income, so there aren't enough low rollers.

And that doesn't include the cost of room, board, and travel.

And instead built the Revel, a much NOT needed casino in the already bloated Atlantic City Casino District in a state that is surrounded by other states that also have their own casinos. This isn't Vegas, East Coast and high-end elite Casinos do NOT mix.

I have to wonder with both the Revel and Showboat threatening to close and the now the Trump Casino closing - I wonder how much impact that much NOT needed casino had on other casinos in the strip. PA/DE/MD/NY all have their own casinos and have been poaching away the day trips. Why drive to Atlantic City when you can drive 30 minutes to your local casino and do some gambling.

So in come Christie who thinks the Revel is the solution to NJ Tax woes and job situation. And instead thousand of casino employees are losing decent paying jobs because there isn't enough business for yet another Casino. And the traffic between NJ and NY is still a nightmare with no tunnel in site.

Even WITHOUT a car, I can get to the casinos in Yonkers (NY), CT (Foxwood/Mohegan Sun), the Poconos (PA), or near Kennedy Airport (NYC) just as easily as I can to Atlantic City. Or I could just stay home and save the cost of travel, room and board by gambling online -- but that requires discretionary income, too.

Trump's newly-built International Links on the outskirts of Aberdeen has seen the businessman embroiled in high-profile rows with the local community and the Scottish government. A plan to place wind turbines within view of the course infuriated Trump to the extent that he took legal action in a bid to halt it. A court ruling went against Trump earlier this year.

As recently as last month, Trump insisted he would divert attention away from Scotland and towards the Doonbeg course he recently purchased in Ireland.

"I said until they give up that charade of these ugly turbines that kill all the birds and probably make people sick with the humming noise and just destroys the environment, until they give that up [we won't invest any more]," Trump said.

Notwithstanding Trump's soreloserman rant & threats against Scotland, within a month of his threats, he snapped up an Irish golf club owned by a Dubai group
http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2014/apr/29/donald-trump-turnberry-golf-course-resort

Donald Trump has confirmed his purchase of the iconic Turnberry resort and golf course in Ayrshire. The billionaire American, whose existing golf course project in Scotland has been overshadowed by a series of controversies, has bought Turnberry from the Dubai-based Leisurecorp.

The sum is undisclosed but Trump is believed to have paid considerably less than the £52m Leisurecorp bought the venue for in 2008. The subsequent economic crash effectively led to Turnberry being on the market immediately with Trump's name routinely linked with a buyout.

Flower of Scotland is Scotland's unofficial national anthem. Just substitute Proud Donald's lawyers for Proud Edward's army.

O flower of Scotland
When will we see your like again
That fought and died for
Your wee bit hill and glen
And stood against him
Proud Edward's army
And sent him homeward
Tae think again

The hills are bare now
And autumn leaves lie thick and still
O'er land that is lost now
Which those so dearly held
And stood against him
Proud Edward's army
And sent him homeward
Tae think again

Those days are passed now
And in the past they must remain
But we can still rise now
And be the nation again
That stood against him
Proud Edward's army
And sent him homeward
Tae think again

29. I remember AC in the '70s before the gambling
Sat Jul 12, 2014, 09:20 AM

In addition to the "famous" (and sometimes infamous) Steel Pier, there were other piers like Million Dollar Pier, Steeple Chase Pier, and Central Pier, that catered to families and notably, to kids, with rides and arcades and whatnot. But when the casinos came, they effectively began an assault on the boardwalk... effectively torpedoing boardwalk businesses and amusements because they wanted to force the tourists into the casinos to gamble. All that's left of the amusement piers is Steel Pier (which I don't even recognize anymore) and Central Pier, with the other 2 becoming a condo and a mall. Thus began the demise of the ocean-front.

When gambling was first approved, they also promised to pump money into the city itself off the boardwalk, but that never materialized, and the city's infrastructure continues to languish some 35-plus years later. It was bad enough that mayor after mayor got caught up in the city's almost intractable corruption.

Back in '74 on a weekend trip there, we stayed at what was then the Holiday Inn (which was a tower not far from the old convention center). In the '80s, that hotel property eventually got gobbled up and incorporated into what became Trump's fantasy - the very Plaza casino (originally Harrah's) that is now scheduled to close.

There has always been so much potential in AC compared to a place like Vegas - mainly because of the ocean. Yet decade after decade, the potential was squandered and corrupted.... and people wonder why folks migrate to Ocean City, NJ (which is dry) or Wildwood, NJ. (also dry but trying to change...). They could be like a Coney Island there (and have gambling too) but they got greedy.

A couple days ago, I stumbled upon a cool video (from 2012) with a 20-minute rolling tour up the boardwalk that captions the names of the major facilities along it. Notable was the obscenely massive Revel near the end of the video (that has been through 1 bankruptcy and ready for another) that is at the far northern end of the boardwalk near ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. How can you build something near nothing with little foot traffic and expect to survive there?

As a fan of HBO's "Boardwalk Empire" (congrats to them for 5 Emmy nods, mostly technical), for the historical backdrop that does actually follow real history, with incorporation of fictional characters and lots of Jersey and Philly references, I can see how very little has changed in the past almost 100 years.

fewer of the old type ones poriented to the middle class where you could buy a steak dinner for 5 bucks, which made the experience easier and better. After all, you could play the penny slots and have fun. But that changed with the opening of Ct. and Pa casinos. There have been efforts to remake A.C. There is a new outlet shopping district but so what? You drive through dilapidated housing to get to the shopping district, casinos or boardwalk.

The biggest threat was from the N.Y, Ct. and Pa casinos. The only reason people drove to A.C. was to gamble. Parkway was always jammed on weekends from Newark to A.C. Now the Parkway traffic jam stops at Long Beach Island. From L.B.I., south, its a clear ride.

I live in northern N.J. If I want to gamble to kill time, I put a couple of hundred in the wallet and leave the credit cards home. Now I have a choice... 2 hour ride to A.C. or 1 hour 15 minute ride to P.A.

Which would you choose? So Pa. gets the tax revenue.

A new casino in northern N.J. would draw people away from the Pa. casinos since the 1 hour, + drive would be reduced to 20 minutes.

to gamble away hundreds to make a northern NJ casino viable? Especially now that there aren't enough of the middle class low roller penny slots players DonCoquixote speaks of? With a 20-minute commute, they sure aren't going to be spending the night. And it's not going to draw gamblers from New York when they have casinos in Yonkers, Connecticut and Queens to choose from -- look, Ma, no New Jersey bridges or tunnels!
