Fellow soldier says Bowe Bergdahl upset he wasn’t allowed ‘to hunt and kill’ the Taliban
Source: Agence France-Presse
A member of Bowe Bergdahls unit in Afghanistan told Congress Wednesday that the recently released US Army sergeant wanted to hunt and kill Taliban, even while telling relatives he aimed to help Afghans.
Last months transfer of five hardened Taliban operatives from Guantanamo prison in exchange for Bergdahls freedom has triggered a political row in Washington, with Republicans accusing President Barack Obama of giving away too much in the swap.
Critics have pointed to reports Bergdahl may have deserted his Afghanistan base on 30 June 2009 after growing frustrated with US policy.
But administration officials argue the military duty to bring all US soldiers home is paramount, and that any required discipline of Bergdahl be meted out after a full investigation.

(22,000 posts)It seems to me like the story is going several different ways and little of it is true. Fellow soldiers should not throw their brothers under the bus.

(8,694 posts)seems a bit too frantic and hysterical. I have to wonder why. They claim they want the "truth" to come out, but seem more interested in controlling the narrative and feeding their egos.

(3,818 posts)1 - is it true that he reported the killing of children with a tank by members of his unit?
2 - if 1 is true, then I feel that he was threatened by members of his unit for "ratting them out." IF HE DID LEAVE in the first place.
Just my opinion which of course with along $5.29 is worth the price of a cup of coffee.

(297 posts)He wanted to hunt the Taliban, does not mean he couldn't have empathy for the afghan people. They are not the same. Like any country, there are terrorist and there are citizens.

(1,616 posts)hunting and killing innocent civilians for "fun." With their senior officers' knowledge. However, the soldiers who were involved did not include Bergdahl. Now, if they were hunting and killing *civilians* and he actually wanted to hunt and kill *Taliban,* why would they have wanted to prevent that. I smell a big pile of BS here.

(2,004 posts)There needs to be an investigation of this entire unit and the organizations pushing out this propaganda. None of those former soldiers' statements make sense. The statements are loaded with code words like "deserter" and propaganda techniques that appear to be designed to protect someone higher up the ladder while attacking Sgt. Bergdahl while he is in recovery from his ordeal and cannot defend himself.
My tiny local paper ran a column written by the county level tea party person who is given space for a weekly column to spew his craziness. It is always very ugly stuff, but his column about this was over the top. The paper is owned by a right wing corporate media conglomerate. The column was filled with all those code words and propaganda designed to cast aspersions on Sgt. Bergdahl's character. It seems very coordinated.
The way that unit operated has the smell of a very bad situation with the one person that might blow the whistle on what was really going on being unable to defend himself while the corporate news media is happily complicit in the character assassination. They seem to protest too much for what the situation warrants.
Was this unit located in the poppy growing region of Afghanistan?
Very disturbing.
