White House: GOP Shutdown Threat Is All About Protecting 'Big Polluters'

The White House fired a warning shot to Republican senators on Wednesday after several of them expressed interest in using a must-pass government funding bill to block the Obama administration's environmental regulations.
"If Republicans want to repeat their government shutdown play to protect the profits of big polluters, they're placing a pretty risky bet," a White House official, who wasn't authorized to discuss the matter on the record, told TPM.
TPM reported that numerous House and Senate Republicans have expressed interest in using appropriations legislation to prohibit implementation of the Environmental Protection Agency's regulations on coal-fired power plants. If they demand that as a condition for keeping the federal government running once funding expires on Sept. 30, it could lead to another partial shutdown.
Senate Republican Conference Chair John Thune (R-SD) said Tuesday there's "going to be a lot of support" among Republicans for using the appropriations process to block the EPA rules. He said the GOP will do "anything we can do to prevent the administration from going forward with what are really poorly timed, very burdensome, very expensive ... regulations."

It pains me to watch another GOP backed shutdown and all the pain and suffering it will cause, but the long term results will buffer the discomfort.
The most stupid part of this is that the Republicans cannot vote on global warming. The environment will not listen to them.

(11,495 posts)They want to shut down the government, again, because it worked so well for them the last time, right before the elections in November! Yep sound like a pretty "stupid" plan if you ask me, or course that seems to be what the republican party is all about these days, trying to be as stupid as possible in order to win over their "stupid" tea bagger base! Just haw much more insane can they get?

This is all about keeping old white men in power.

(564 posts)Some may post this in jest, but I suspect this more truth in there than many realize. Democrats have this irritating tendency to step in and prevent the Republicans from shooting themselves in the foot. Voter turnout, or lack thereof, tends to reflect this sort of thing.

(5,756 posts)Let me get this straight. The Obama administration wants to make it safe for our kids and grandkids to have drinkable water and breathable air. Doing so will cost the corporations that have polluted our environment for decades and made huge profits from doing so.
I remember a phrase "Time to Pay the Piper." It applies still today.

(18,625 posts)It won't play a part in the fall elections at all in spite of all the gleeful gloating of Democrats at the time.
If they do it again this year though, it will be on everyone's mind when they go into the voting booth.
