Perry rouses delegates with call to take back the White House

Source: Austin American-Statesman

FORT WORTH — Gov. Rick Perry offered the Texas Republican State Convention a rousing valedictory of his historic service as Texas’ longest-serving governor, but brought the crowd to its feet with his forward-looking call to take back the White House.

“You have changed Texas for the better, now it’s time to change America for the better,” Perry said. “It’s in our power to make all things new. Let’s roll up our sleeves; let’s rebuild American.”

Perry’s speech, which clocked in a little over 30 minutes, was flawlessly delivered before an audience of delegates who will be participating in a presidential straw poll, in which Sen. Ted Cruz, who will speak Friday, is likely to score a first-place finish. But Perry’s speech showed what made him look like front-runner material when he ran for president in 2012 until a ragged performance cost him his standing.

But Perry is now very much considering a second run, and everything about his speech Thursday — touting Texas as a model for America — offered a blueprint for a second run.

I avoid Texas anytime I travel and when I do business I avoid companies whose headquarters are there.

I would rather move to Uganda than live in Texas.

Austin, San Antonio and Houston are very progressive cities. Houston is the largest city in the USA that has elected an opening gay person as their senator and they elected her twice. (She is a democrat).

Unfortunately those progressive cities are wretchedly gerrymandered to ensure that some right-wing nutjob is representing these progressive cities in Congress (state and federal level).

And to be fair, if you are from Atlanta Georgia, you're state isn't that much better to judge Texas.

The city of Atlanta, similar to AUS, SAT and HOU are very progressive cities. It is the rest of both states that contain the asshats.

My only observation is that, aside from Carter, Georgia has not produced a figure that has had such national impact as GWB and Dick Cheney.

Because Texas is so large in terms of area and population it's impact on the country is much greater.

But I have to admit I still avoid flying through or driving through Texas if I can. There is something about the "don't mess with Texas" and the "Republic of Texas" monikers that cause me to take my tourist dollars elsewhere.

Wilmington is the biggest city here in Wilmington and it's extremely progressive. But the further south you travel the more conservative it gets. I rarely go anywhere in Lower Delaware outside the beach towns. And I know there are progressives in those rural areas, just not as many.

As for Dick Cheney, he is from Wyoming--at least for long enough to get on the presidential ballot since the Constitution prohibits both candidates being from the same state.

Gov. Perry blasts feds at Texas GOP convention

He told thousands of delegates gathered in Fort Worth that grassroots conservatives have already "changed Texas for the better" and urged them to do the same for America.

The loudest cheers came when Perry called the new health care law "a failed scheme" and said the federal government shouldn't be allowed to trample states' rights.

Perry also said the Obama administration had left America "wandering in the economic wilderness."

From the Fort Worth Star-Telegram: http://www.star-telegram.com/2014/06/05/5877202/rick-perry-texas-will-be-political.html

“National Democrats think Texas is the new battleground,” Perry told a crowd of thousands of Republicans gathered in Fort Worth for the first day of their state convention. “Let’s be real clear.

“Texas will be their political burial ground.”

Thursday was the kick off of the GOP state convention, a three-day event geared to boost party unity and ramp up Republicans for the November general election.

During the three days, while as many as 11,000 delegates and alternates attend the convention, the largest political gathering in the nation, work continues on a controversial party platform that touches on issues such as creating a visa program for undocumented workers and potentially dropping some anti-gay language.

What a waste of money that could be used for good causes. He has no chance of winning the nomination, even with all the coaching he's had. He's a fool who only managed to stay in office because his state has abysmal voter turnout, and more than it's fair share of partisans willing to vote for a ham sandwich if it had an R behind its name.

I can hear it now . . . Perry's stump speech:

"On Day One of the Perry presidency I will (1) repeal Obamacare; (2) outlaw gay marriage; and, (3) . . . uh . . . uh . . . something else!!"
