A British national has been detained in Ukraine, the Foreign Office has confirmed.
Graham Phillips is a journalist working for Russian TV station Russia Today.
It is understood he was detained in Mariupol, eastern Ukraine, on Tuesday and was taken to Kiev overnight by the Ukrainian National Guard.
The Foreign Office said: "We are in contact with the Ukrainian authorities and stand ready to provide consular assistance."

(43,174 posts)Says he wasn't beaten and was treated fairly (which is far more than one could say about the pro-Russian militants).
So we'll be seeing more performance art from Graham, apparently.

(53,661 posts)I have trouble grasping the reasoning for either of these kidnappings or if we want to be nice, these detainments or arrests. It's apparently intimidation, as it serves no military purpose. (?)

(43,174 posts)Graham was so laughably bad at propagandizing that anyone with half a brain would recognize it for the bullshit that it is. Detaining him only feeds his ego and gives him some false sense of legitimacy that he otherwise wouldn't have received. There's no doubt that pro-Russian supporters will exploit his detention for all its worth, just as they've done with Odessa.
They were better off just letting him run around and making a jackass out of himself.

(43,174 posts)But after his claim of being shot at, I can't say for sure.

(3,746 posts)I'm sure he can easily best that.

This video is being talked about because it is key to why Russian journalists have been detained by Ukrainian forces. The video, taken by LifeNews or LifeNews freelancers, appears to show Russian-backed separatists firing an anti-tank weapon in Slavyansk. The real reason it is being talked about, however, is that the journalists in the video appear to give orders to the soldiers to fire the weapon, which according to many would cross the line between recording the insurgency and being part of it.

Shit...tried to post the video, but it seems it's now been taken down by the owner for copyright. That's rich.
Follow the story there and you can see the complaint is about Phillips, LifeNews, and others actively creating news as well as openly carrying out tasks for the DPR that goes beyond propaganda, such as recon and transporting weapons.
