Holder warns of 'subtle' threats to racial equality
Source: Washington Post
In his most extensive comments on race since early 2009, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. on Saturday morning argued that Americas struggle for racial equality has become defined less by expressions of outright bigotry than by policies that subtly but systematically impede equal opportunity.
"The greatest threats," he said, "are more subtle. They cut deeper. And their terrible impact endures long after the headlines have faded and obvious, ignorant expressions of hatred have been marginalized." He delivered the remarks during commencement exercises at historically black Morgan State University in Baltimore.

(11,563 posts)As opposed to the blatant ones that anyone with their eyes even half open can see?

(29,704 posts)even look at. You can see it in almost everything. I'm thinking about a peanuts cartoon--at a party all the children have hats but the black boy who on his own side of the table. Little little things that only if you have the eyes to see the slight can you feel the pain.
Until we learn to think in terms of other, we won't be able to lift our blinders. When I feel sad, I can know that millions of others feel sad, no matter who they are, for just the same reasons. When I feel joy, I can also know that millions of others feel the same for all the same reasons. We are not separate and we are all people.

(18,124 posts)both institutionalized, systemic racism and losing my home to a banker that could care less about me losing pay by being forced to retire because of the evil that people perpetrate upon each other in the workplace, both private and government. Racism is part of the reality for millions, not a diversion. Bankers are part of the evil of greed capitalism that will never go away, just like racism. Speak for yourself.
