O'Malley signs transgender rights bill

Source: The Baltimore SUn

Gov. Martin O'Malley signed a law this morning to make Maryland one of a handful of states to extend anti-discrimination laws to protect transgender people.

The measure that protects transgender people against job and housing discrimination was one of scores of bills the governor was scheduled to sign during the last scheduled public signing ceremony of his eight years as governor.

Among the legislation also to receive the governor's signature are bills outlawing so-called "revenge porn" posting intimate pictures on the Internet as a way of getting back at a former spouse or lover and overhauling the state's speed camera law to add new safeguards for drivers from malfunctioning systems.

The governor handed the pen he used to sign the transgender protection law to Sen. Richard S. Madaleno, a Montgomery County Democrat who fought for eight years to convince his colleagues to pass it.

3. He does have bigger plans for his political future.

He's very methodical in his execution of his plans and he's only 51 years old. He's going no place but up in my opinion.

10. As far as I'm concerned, it's working.

If we have here a prospective candidate who sees a political advantage in doing a lot of things that progressives want, then let me go get my checkbook.

2. Maryland has grown into being a very liberal state.

There was a time when MD was considered part of the South and Baltimore was thought of as a rather southern city. Now MD seems like part of the Northeast. I'm glad they passed this law and O'Malley signed it. I hope we see a lot more of him in the future. I've been impressed by everything I've seen about him so far.

5. Things are turning the corner here in the USA.

Slowly, but surely. Then, there's the theocratic GOP.

7. I do think a lot of people are getting fed up with republican and tea party BS. All

they seem to want is a lawless land and no taxes, except for those laws (or lack of laws) that can be used to persecute people. They seem to feel really good about persecution and denial of civil rights and their longing for a theocratic state and punishment.
