Weather service confirms 3 tornadoes ravaged parts of Nebraska

BEAVER CROSSING, Neb. — Needing to catch some sleep before a Sunday night work shift, Joshua Perkins ignored the storm sirens.

Then his wife, Sheena, who had their two children at her sister's house a few doors down in Beaver Crossing, sent a text message telling him to go to the basement. So the 33-year-old U.S. Army veteran grabbed the dog and scrambled downstairs just as the storm hit.

“It literally sounded like artillery going off,” Perkins said. “It reminded me of being on the artillery gun line back in training.”

When the barrage subsided, he headed to his sister-in-law's house, where everyone was fine. Perkins said he felt fortunate to spend Monday cleaning up downed trees and doing temporary repairs on his battered house.

The storm ripped the roof off Cliff Karthauser's home in Elkhorn, scattering white insulation like feathers from a ripped pillow. On Monday morning, the pieces of insulation, soaked by rain, covered furniture and books in Karthauser's living room like drifts of snow.

Standing in front of the house on Camden Avenue near Indian Creek Golf Course, Karthauser said he believed the home to be a complete loss.

“Part of our roof is impaled in a roof over there,” he said, pointing toward a house about two blocks away where large hunks of wood were strewn about. “That's our roof in that yard over there.”

The National Weather Service confirmed Monday night that two F1 tornadoes hit the Elkhorn-Bennington area Sunday. F1 tornadoes are classified on the Fujita scale as having winds of 86 mph to 110 mph.
