Abbas calls Holocaust `most heinous crime'

Source: AP-Excite

By KARIN LAUB

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday called the Holocaust "the most heinous crime" of modern history and expressed his sympathy for the victims, a rare acknowledgment by an Arab leader of Jewish suffering during the Nazi genocide.

Abbas' comments appeared, in part, aimed at reaching out to Israeli public opinion at a time of deep crisis in Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts. The remarks were published by the Palestinian official news agency WAFA just hours before the start of Israel's annual Holocaust commemoration.

The decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been accompanied by mutual mistrust.

Many Israelis fear that the Palestinians aren't truly ready to accept a Jewish presence in the Holy Land, and that ignorance or even denial of the Holocaust among Palestinians is an expression of that attitude. Denials or attempts to minimize the Holocaust, which saw the systematic killing of 6 million Jews by Nazi Germany in World War II, are widespread in the Arab world.

2. That's the best diplomatic move all week.

I am a bitter and cynical person, but I'm willing to sit back and watch for a couple of weeks, and see what happens when both sides blink and say, "wait a minute, maybe we actually care about each other, just a little bit?"

From the more practical point of view of someone who has watched the intractable Arab-Israeli dispute my whole life, one of the major things that has soured me on the Palestinians was their unusual ability to cozy up to the evil, losing side of any major conflict (the Turks, the Nazis, the Commies, the terrorists), and their use of genocidal euphemism ("drive them into the sea&quot . Denying the Holocaust, or worse, applauding it or suggesting it be repeated, is simply beyond the pale and most diplomats cannot take such groups seriously. I am sure that is one major reason why Palestinians have been on the outside looking in.

And, since everyone who plays this stupid pissing contest demands some sort of false equivalency to prove the other side is a piece a shit as well, let's not forget that the Nazis also specialized in compressing unwanted populations in jail-states, disenfranchising parts of their own population, and bullying neighboring nations.

So if you don't like what I said above, think of two Nazi Germanys fighting over the same deforested wasteland, and the advantage one side potentially gains by simply showing half a second of empathy.

… who took his students on a class trip to Auschwitz. He was branded as a traitor

Professor Mohammed S. Dajani took 27 Palestinian college students to visit the former Auschwitz Nazi concentration camp in Poland a few weeks ago as part of a project designed to teach empathy and tolerance. Upon his return, his university disowned the trip, his fellow Palestinians branded him a traitor and friends advised a quick vacation abroad.

Teaching empathy and tolerance THE HORROR.

Wonder if Abbas will get the same treatment.

6. empathy for Israelis in no way undermines the Palestinian cause. If anything, it makes propaganda

against Palestinians much harder.

I hope this is beginning of a smarter "fight" out of the Palestinians.

7. If he really wanted to cause a stir, he'd give up on a separate Palestinian state and call for ONE

state with equal rights for all religions and races, and cite the relevant parts of the Geneva Convention that says land taken in war must either be given back it's sovereignty or incorporated into the invading country in relatively short order after the invasion.

10. Israel will never agree to a one-state solution; the demographics aren't on their side.

See here for instance from a group supporting a two-state solution specifically because of demographics: http://www.israelnsp.org/what-they-say/status-quo-is-dangerous/israels-demographic-challen.html

12. I know--which is why calling for ONE state with equal rights for all might lead to two states

a lot sooner.

It would be hard for Israel to argue against one state with equal rights for all on the world stage without looking racist, so it would suddenly be in their interest to finish up their business with the Palestinians as quickly as possible.

The prime minister of Israel on Sunday dismissed President Mahmoud Abbas' remarks mourning victims of the Holocaust as a public relations stunt aimed at placating the international community.

and he dismissed it just like in the article you posted. I doubt HE really wants peace and a 2-state solution with the Palestinians, which is also why he keeps building those settlements.

I hope we hear more of this kind of acknowledgement of the problems of the Israeli people and more compassion. That could lead to a real peace. It eases the way for a show of compassion from the Israeli side to the Israeli/Palestinian dispute.

I hope the report is correct.
