North Dakota finds more radioactive oil waste

Source: Associated Press

North Dakota confirmed Thursday the discovery of a new radioactive dump of waste from oil drilling, and separately a company hired to clean up waste found in February at another location said it removed double the amount of radioactive material originally estimated to be there.

The Canadian company hired to clean up the largest dump found so far, located at an abandoned gas station in Noonan, also said that it suspects the soil at the site is contaminated and that samples were being analyzed.

The twin disclosures highlight a growing problem from North Dakota's booming oil development — illegal disposal of oil filter socks, which are tubular nets that strain liquids during the oil production process and contain low amounts of radioactive material. Health officials have said that radioactive filter socks increasingly are being found along roadsides, in abandoned buildings or in commercial trash bins — sometimes those of competing oil companies.

State Environmental Health Chief Dave Glatt said investigators are examining the new site north of Crosby — a town about five miles from the Canadian border — which was discovered late last week by Divide County Emergency Manager Jody Gunlock.

Gunlock said he found 15 garbage cans and about 25 bags full of the oil filter socks.

Perhaps we should ask those staunch supporters of the 'job creating' oil industry to lend a hand with the clean up. (Well I can dream can't I?) KnR

... I'm in! No sense stickin the bill to big gubment who will have to pay that bill with our tax dollars. What an interesting notion! If one wants to support Big Oil, Big Coal; Big Nuke; Big Pharma; Big_________(fill in the blank) then one should be willing to back that support with ones wallet as insurance should things go horribly wrong. If money is speech then let the American voter sing loud and proud! Call it the "Put Yer Money Where Yer Mouth Is Act"! I'll put my support and if needed my insurance money on eco-friendly energy sources like 'Big' wind and 'Big' solar. We The People could bring back the 'Big' hemp industry. I suspect a great many conservatives would give careful scrutiny to ACTUAL FACTS rather than Fox (so called) News and quickly jump the (oil) ship and join in on a number of eco-friendly fronts! This could be our nation's ticket to some fast tracked research into greenhouse gas reduction technology and implementation! Even those who wanted to back the endeavors of the polutionists would be screaming to high heaven that we need to regulate the hell out of 'em! The cons would be all over growing our suddenly far too small government by wanting hordes of inspectors to keep Big_______ (fill in the blank again), in line and very cautious!

I am loving this train of thought, capitalist idea, simply capitalist!

(Please note that I'll be expecting legislation on by noon tomorrow!)
