Eric Holder: Sonia Sotomayor ‘courageous’

Eric Holder lauded Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s dissent in the Michigan affirmative action case, calling it “courageous.”
The attorney general, speaking at a diversity event at the Justice Department on Wednesday, said the justice’s dissent offered a reminder that the U.S. still needs “to address and remediate the lingering impacts of racial discrimination.”
The Supreme Court on Tuesday in Schuette v. Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action voted 6-2 to uphold Michigan’s constitutional amendment that instituted a ban on affirmative action for admission to the state’s public universities.
While Holder didn’t criticize the majority opinion, he did quote a portion of Sotomayor’s dissent. "
A)s Justice Sonia Sotomayor said just yesterday in her courageous and personal dissent in the Michigan college admissions case, we ought not, ‘wish away, rather than confront, the racial inequality that exists in our society. … The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to speak openly and candidly on the subject of race,’” Holder said.
