Eric Holder: Sonia Sotomayor ‘courageous’

Eric Holder lauded Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayors dissent in the Michigan affirmative action case, calling it courageous.
The attorney general, speaking at a diversity event at the Justice Department on Wednesday, said the justices dissent offered a reminder that the U.S. still needs to address and remediate the lingering impacts of racial discrimination.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday in Schuette v. Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action voted 6-2 to uphold Michigans constitutional amendment that instituted a ban on affirmative action for admission to the states public universities.
While Holder didnt criticize the majority opinion, he did quote a portion of Sotomayors dissent. " A)s Justice Sonia Sotomayor said just yesterday in her courageous and personal dissent in the Michigan college admissions case, we ought not, wish away, rather than confront, the racial inequality that exists in our society.
The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to speak openly and candidly on the subject of race, Holder said.

(23,664 posts)It may be too much to hope for him to emulate her and show some courage himself by putting a few Wall Street thugs and Bush administration war criminals in jail.

(5,169 posts)He can not simply declare "You are a bad person you must go to jail". These cases take a lot of research and a jury that can understand some really complex methods and terminology.
Hopefully there are cases pending and cases we don't know about in the pipeline. But if anyone is expecting lines of buses hauling business, political, and intelligence service leaders into prison for quarter century stretches, they are facing certain disappointment.
