Lawyer says Afghan killings suspect recalls little

Source: AP

FORT LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (AP) -- Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales remembers little about the night he is accused of slaughtering 16 Afghan civilians in a nighttime shooting rampage, his lawyer says.

He has a sketchy memory of events from before and after the killings but recalls very little or nothing of the time the military believes he went on a shooting spree through two Afghan villages, attorney John Henry Browne said Monday after meeting his client for the first time.

Browne and other members of Bales' defense team have said they plan additional meetings this week with the soldier, who is being held at Fort Leavenworth.

...leaves one with the impression that Sergeant Bales has a deeply flawed character. I'm still puzzled as to how he could be drinking alcohol at what has been described as a combat outpost. I recall reading somewhere that General Order 1 had been amended to prohibit this, but I have no idea where to find the link.

but I was under the impression that alcohol wasn't allowed on government property - period.

I mention that only because on the two occasions I've been to the Xmas swing dance Camps at Fort Worden, Port Townsend , WA that applied to the location which is now a State Park. Its an old 1890's look out post which is about as far NW as you can possibly go in the USA.

You're impression is wrong. The officers club being the first and most obvious exception. The PX also has alcohol sales. Last time I knew, navy ships usually had a meal once a week where beer was served, at least while in port. Finally, those "care" packages that families sent often contain plain plastic bottles in them.

this is often used, when there is no other defense - a supposed form of temporary insanity
