Alabama woman guns down son’s gay lover at truck stop

Source: Raw Story

An Alabama woman has been charged with murder after allegedly fatally shooting her son’s boyfriend.

Tuscaloosa County Deputies said that 51-year-old Anita T. Hill’s son was “involved in a long-term relationship” with 36-year-old Jamie R. Johnson. According to deputies, the three agreed to meet at Love’s Truck Stop in McCalla on Monday to talk.

Investigators determined that the group talked for a while and then Hill’s son returned to his vehicle. Hill and Johnson continued speaking for a few more minutes. When Johnson turned to walk away, Hill shot him in the back, WBRC reported.

Police also said that they believed that Hill shot Johnson because he had been “violent” and abusive with her son. But no criminal records were immediately available to back up that story.

“We don’t see this in any way being a hate crime,” Sgt. Dale Phillips noted. “We see this being a family having issues in this. All the people involved in this were either related or had been acquaintances for several years.”

Phillips said the he did not believe Hill went to the truck stop with the intention of killing Johnson.

Hill was being held in lieu of a $75,000 bond in the Tuscaloosa County Jail.

How the fuck does he know what Hill intended to do at the meeting? It isn't a hate crime because everyone knew everyone?! WTF?! It is very possible it was a domestic issue, but claiming it is already not a hate crime is bullshit!

I believe this case indeed rises to the level of a hate crime. ..not domestic as the relationship was between the victim and the son. Mom's just hated gays making this a hate crime.

much of here. Mix anger and a concealed weapon and that means potential good gunner turning into bad gunner.
Everyone should be able to carry a gun what harm is it?

If a mother had shot her daughter's abusive husband in the back, I doubt it would have made it out of the town paper.
And nary a peep from the son. Nada.
The folks here who are thinking this is a hate crime about homosexuality are being oversensitive. At 51 y.o., you can bet the mother has dealt with the issues of her son being gay.
It sounds to me more like a mother trying to rescue her adult offspring from lethal domestic abuse.
If so, then those who are defending the dead guy in this story are actually supporting domestic abuse.

Can you really blame people for thinking there might at least have been an element of homophobia here?

Second of all, just because your kid's S.O. is abusing them doesn't mean you can shoot them in the back. That's still murder, not self-defense, in almost any scenario I can think of.

And a straight person accusing gays (and allies) of "being oversensitive" just looks like a jerk no matter what.

I've seen women driven to killing their abuser, and it was murder for them too.
But when it comes to domestic abuse, karma's a bitch. Anyone who abuses their spouse or lover deserves it back tenfold. I've dealt with abusers, and while murder is never justified, I'd guess the former victim of a dead abuser might now enjoy a stroll across the living room without having to walk on egg shells every night.
As far as looking like a jerk, I'm not accusing gay folks of anything, and I most certainly am an ally of gay people. You are making the fundamental mistake that all gay people agree with you, either that or that somehow if a man is gay it's okay to dismiss any testimony that he abused people. Because, after all, <sarcasm>it's Alabama.</sarcasm>
Truth is, I'm not the yahoo mistreating a mother, who appears may have been defending her gay son from an abusive lover, like she was some sort of newly discovered member of the Westboro Baptist Church.
So yes, I can judge people for their narrow minds, especially when the evidence indicates that, you know, they have narrow minds.

out of hand. We'll see how this shakes out, though.

And I'm actually straight - not that it matters - but the "being oversensitive" part rubbed me the wrong way.

Otherwise I agree with your points about domestic abuse. It is a pernicious, evil thing.
