Lisa Brown Just Made The Michigan Governor's Race More Interesting

Source: Huffington Post

Michigan's Democratic candidate for governor announced his running mate Thursday, choosing a former lawmaker who has championed women's rights and marriage equality.

Mark Schauer, a former congressman who is running against incumbent Gov. Rick Snyder (R) in the 2014 election, picked Lisa Brown to be his lieutenant governor. Currently the Oakland County Clerk, Brown previously served two terms as a Democrat in the state House of Representatives.

“Lisa Brown is a proven leader who’s always been a tough fighter for the middle class,” Schauer said in a statement. "Lisa shares my values and priorities for making education our top economic priority, and working to make Michigan’s economy fairer for the middle class."
Oakland is a middle- and upper-class county just north of Detroit. According to the Detroit Free Press, Brown is the first Democrat to hold the clerk's post in decades.

Last month, Brown testified in a federal trial challenging Michigan's ban on gay marriage. A defendant in the case, she said that clerks received a memo from state Attorney General Bill Schuette telling them not to issue licenses to gay couples even if the ban was struck down. In her testimony, Brown said she would follow a judge's orders, not Schuette's.

The only reason Michigan has republican strength is due to gerrymandering and misinformation. And scapegoating Detroit had a lot to do with it to. John Engler was the worst but he's part of the Bush Family Crime Syndicate for life now. That family needs to be purged from politics and have their citizenship revoked. Most people in MI are Dems and more decent than their failed leadership.

In June 2012, Michigan House Republicans prevented Brown from speaking on the floor in a debate about abortion legislation after saying "I'm flattered that you're all so interested in my vagina, but no means no." Brown was gaveled off the floor and prohibited from speaking along with Representative Barb Byrum, who proposed a ban on vasectomies. Democrats called the incident evidence that Republicans were trampling on women's rights, with Senator Gretchen Whitmer saying "the war on women in Michigan is not fabricated — this is very real — and it comes at the highest levels of state government."

Brown stated: “I was either banned for being Jewish and rightfully pointing out that HB 5711 was forcing contradictory religious beliefs upon me and my religion. Or is it because I used the word ‘vagina,’ which is an anatomically, medically correct term?” On June 19, 2012 Representative Wayne Schmidt provided the GOP viewpoint and answered on the Michael Patrick Shiels radio program by characterizing both of the female representatives as "kids" who were "throwing temper tantrums" and in need of "time outs." House Speaker Jase Bolger stated that by referencing vagina, and then saying 'no means no,' thereby making a rape reference, is inappropriate for legislative setting.
