Doobie Brothers drummer Michael Hossack dies in Wyoming of cancer

Source: Los Angeles Times

SONOMA, California (AP)

Longtime Doobie Brothers drummer Michael Hossack has died at age 65.

The band's manager, Bruce Cohn, said in a statement that Hossack died of cancer Monday in his home in Wyoming.

Hossack played with the group from 1971 to 1973 and rejoined in 1987. His drumming can be heard on early hits including "Listen To The Music," ''China Grove" and "Blackwater." He stopped performing with the band two years ago while struggling with cancer.

Doobie Brothers co-founder Tom Johnston said, "Mike has always been a part of my musical life and the life of the Doobie Brothers ... He was an incredible musician."

...Another Park, Another Sunday, but I still had to go and listen to it in honor of his passing.

Very sad. I have liked the Doobies since before I even started school.

I have a Doobie Brothers mix CD that I keep in the car at all times, which is basically the entire "Best of the Doobies" album PLUS "Just Another Park, Another Sunday" and "I Cheat The Hangman." It never felt like a true "Best Of" until I added those tracks.

01. China Grove
02. Long Train Runnin'
03. Takin' It to the Streets
04. Listen to the Music
05. Black Water
06. Rockin' Down the Highway
07. Jesus Is Just Alright
08. It Keeps You Runnin'
09. South City Midnight Lady
10. Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me)
11. Without You
12. Another Park, Another Sunday
13. I Cheat the Hangman

Regarding the drums on the "What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits" album:

New second drummer Keith Knudsen replaced Hossack during the recording of Vices. Hossack was thus credited as a guest musician on the back of the album, even though he had played drums throughout the recording sessions. The front and back covers of the album show concert photographs taken from behind the group, which makes it difficult to tell which drummers are seen; they are in fact Knudsen and Hartman, photographed on tour while the album was in production. Knudsen's only actual musical contribution to the album was to sing backing vocals.

Only one left, as I remember, they had two!

Sadly, we're coming of age. I have had two friends die in the last week, both in their early fifties, and my best friend has been in the hospital for a week. I think he's going to get better, and as I think about it, I need to ring him and check up to see.

I plant my garden each year, with the hopes I'll be there for the harvest. It's all we can do.

The band at my senior prom couldn't play anything but Doobie Brothers, and not them very well--I just couldn't stand 'em after that.

That's really sad. The Doobie were a great band, his drumming was excellent, and I'm sorry to hear that he's gone.

I even tried to copy some of your licks when playing Doobies covers.

RIP. You were very good.
