Bill introduced to regulate men's reproductive health

Source: Dayton Daily News (Ohio)

COLUMBUS – Before getting a prescription for Viagra or other erectile dysfunction drugs, men would have to see a sex therapist, receive a cardiac stress test and get a notarized affidavit signed by a sexual partner affirming impotency, if state Sen. Nina Turner has her way.

The Cleveland Democrat introduced Senate Bill 307 this week.

A critic of efforts to restrict abortion and contraception for women, Turner says she is concerned about men’s reproductive health. Turner’s bill joins a trend of female lawmakers submitting bills regulating men’s health. Turner said if state policymakers want to legislate women’s health choices through measures such as House Bill 125, known as the “Heartbeat bill,” they should also be able to legislate men’s reproductive health. Ohio anti-abortion advocates say the two can’t be compared.

Birth control is covered covered - though I wish it was considered a preventive treatment. Our employer covers some generic drugs as preventive medication and there's a $0 payment on these medications, no deductibles, no copays.

Sun Mar 11, 2012, 03:21 AM
Mar 2012

This bill openly and forcefully states that men aren't entitled to the same privacy other medical patients are. It makes a point of destroying doctor/patient confidentiality.

Sec. 4731.45. As used in this section, "physician" means an individual authorized under this chapter to practice medicine and surgery or osteopathic medicine and surgery.

(B) Prior to issuing a prescription for a drug intended to treat symptoms of erectile dysfunction, a physician shall do all of the following:

(1) Obtain from the patient a notarized affidavit in which at least one of the patient's sexual partners certifies that the patient has experienced symptoms of erectile dysfunction in the ninety days preceding the date on the affidavit;

(2) Refer the patient to a sexual therapist approved by the state medical board for an assessment of the possible causes of the patient's symptoms of erectile dysfunction and obtain a written report in which the therapist concludes that the patient's symptoms are not solely attributable to one or more psychological conditions;

Section (B)(1) violates everything I know about HIPPA laws.

I think it's bullshit. She says she's "concerned about men's reproductive health". I say if she's so concerned, she should introduce a bill making it possible for men to get free condoms from their health insurers, and if they don't have health insurance, the government should provide them free of charge. Since condoms help prevent the spread of STDs, this sounds like a move someone who is "concerned about men's reproductive health" could reasonably make.

So here we have a lawmaker introducing bills NOT to improve the state of her state, but to prove a point. Way to go Nina.

Side note... if not having the right toothpaste causes my dentist bill to go through the roof and my health to suffer, why doesn't my insurer or someone else have to provide free toothpaste for me?

"This bill openly and forcefully states that men aren't entitled to the same privacy other medical patients are. It makes a point of destroying doctor/patient confidentiality." Yes, I guess it would insure that female and male alike would have no medical privacy, except maybe prepubescent children.

It won't hurt the guys (much) to go through some of the same crap that women do every day. In the unlikely event that such a bill would actually pass, it would put men on an equal footing with women as far as state-mandated medical procedures. Otherwise, in these states women will continue to be second-class citizens, "probed by the state" at will.

These retaliative bills illustrate perfectly the absurdity of the Republican bills. I love them.

43. you don't need a doctor's prescription for condoms or toothpaste
Sun Mar 11, 2012, 08:26 AM
Mar 2012

Nor the appointment with a doctor for the work up and exam in order to get that prescription.

You may have noticed that the assault on women bill only applies to the birth control pill (whether used for birth control or not) and not all the other various over-the-counter birth control methods like condoms (guess what, women buy them, too! - these days we're not only expected to take the pregnancy risk but pay for it ourselves as well), and various other spermicides whether used in conjunction with a diaphram or not. And that's because they already aren't covered by insurance because they don't require a doctor's prescription nor the doctor's visit in order for the doctor to write the prescription. Women have already been paying out of pocket for over-the-counter birth control all the way along just as men have with buying condoms.

And PRIVACY laws??? Seriously??? Since Roe v. Wade that made it law that a woman can have an abortion if she wants one do you have ANY idea how many subsequent laws have been passed to BUTCHER that privacy in EVERY state??? The amount of humiliating and expensive privacy invading hoops that have to be jumped through are an outrage. Three or more day forced wait times (because us wimmins are so dumb we don't REALLY know if we want an abortion or not), forced lectures and BULLYING to "choose life" (because us wimmins are so dumb we don't REALLY know that being pregnant means you're going to have a baby), and on and on and now these grotesque ultrasound bills on top of everything else whether an invasive legal rape or a worthless non-invasive ultrasound that is not capable of detecting a pregnancy in the first place for the VAST majority of abortion seakers. Nevermind that Roe v. Wade was passed based on the PRIVACY of a woman's choice between her and her doctor. And let's not forget the utterly foul miscarriage laws when in the VAST majority of those cases the pregnancy was WANTED not to mention the other utterly foul "partial birth" abortion bill that made no provision for the health of the mother but not even her LIFE when that's the ONLY reason for them, and those pregnancies are WANTED.

And what about vasectomies that every single health insurance company pays for with no humiliating and invasive non-medical and expensive hoop jumping complete with wait times, forced lectures and bullying that nobody bats an eyelash at??? Is it possibly because nobody is all "concerned" that them mens is so dumb they have not a clue what a vasectomy does and need to be forced to wait for a few days to try to wrap their silly empty little heads around it and lectured and non-medically invaded and bullied because the sperm is so sacred? Or could it possibly be that nobody is the slightest bit interested in controlling the lives of MEN?

And since you brought up this supposed unfairness of men having to buy condoms (if they feel like it - it's not like THEY have to worry about getting pregnant), how about all the female reproductive issues stuff that women have to buy out-of-pocket compared to men. Raise your hands, guys, and let us know how much money you've spent out-of-pocket on maxi-pads, tampons, spermicides, pregnancy tests, ovulation tests, yeast infection preparations, douches, vaginal odor eliminators, pain meds/heating pads/muscle relaxers for cramps, other meds for bloating, other meds for PMS symptoms, lost time at work for your reproductive monthly suffering, etc., etc.

Just TRY crying the blues about how men should be getting "free" condoms. When any man's out-of-pocket expenses for dealing with their reproductive issues comes anywhere in the same universe as a woman's THEN you can start crying.

Go after the GOP and their overt efforts to send us back to the 50's (or earlier). I mean, on one hand, I get the point. Yes, of course, you make the "tit for tat" argument, which is fine.

But one of the things I see that the Republicans are doing by making hay out of the contraception "issue" is making themselves look like buffoons. The more they keep it up, the more they damage their standing with the general electorate, again pandering to the "base".

I fear that this sort of nonsense bill, while certainly an eye-opener, introduces the clowning buffoonery to our side of the issue. Personally, and as a voter, I've had it with nonsense politics and am not really interested in "making a statement" as much as I'm interested in "making good policy".

I just hope we don't continue circus politics in perpetuity as a result. The national political stage is already a damned freakshow and while its reality TV nature may be entertaining to some, I personally have gotten a little tired of waiting for good policy to come from any of it.

One problem with this is the automatic assumption that all relationships are straight.
they aren't
While I agree with the sentiment behind this bill, and even agree with it, I find the bill itself to be bullshit, and I thought our side was better than this.

as far as BC goes, most women i've ever known have been on BC since they were like 14 or younger because of bad periods, and the need to control their cycle. you know, actual medical reasons!

Men have reproductive rights??? When did that happen?

Frankly, this bill could pass and most people would never know or care. The few men who might object will be to embarrassed to speak out anyway.

I should get more information on the subject of mens healthcare. Let me check the governments mens health orginizations fro information

www.menshealth.gov seems to be down at the moment, www.womenshealth.gov is up though

I'll check some other government agencies.

I'll check the national institutes of health offices of mens health http://ormh.od.nih.gov/ hmm, seems to be down as well, at least the http://orwh.od.nih.gov/ site is up.

How about the FDA, they have http://www.fda.gov/ForConsumers/byAudience/ForWomen/default.htm surely in the interests of fairness there should be a corresponding http://www.fda.gov/ForConsumers/byAudience/ForMen/default.htm page, shouldn't there? I guess not.

hey it even has it's own domain www.fda.gov/womens let's check out www.fda.gov/mens hmm page not found, seems to be a disturbing trend.

I got those links fro the dept of labor, which has data stating that around 93% of workplaces deaths are men. Hmm, Men are dying much earlier than women, let's find some scientific studies to show there is a GENETIC rather than Sociological reason for this. Sorry I can't find ANY studies that show that there is any genetic reason for early male deaths vs female. Oddly the statistics for male vs female life expectancy in 1900 have men and women living about the same number of years, I wonder what has happened to change this so drasticly? The data already excludes war deaths.

How about the CDC?

www.cdc.gov/women/

www.cdc.gov/women/ BINGO! I got one!!! I guess ignoring half the population would be grossly negligent for the CDC. I wonder why so many other government run taxpayer funded organizations display such a blatant discriminatory bias?

The 2'nd leading cause of death for both men and women is cancer. %22.1 for women and %24.3 for men %3.2 higher rate for men, yet womens specific cancer programs get funded at a much higher rate then mens.

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind only lung cancer. About 1 man in 36 will die of prostate cancer.

NCI Issues Cancer Trends Progress Report: 2009/2010 Update

This list of common cancer types includes cancers that are diagnosed with the greatest frequency in the United States, excluding nonmelanoma skin cancers: Cancer incidence and mortality statistics reported by the American Cancer Society1 and other resources were used to create the list. To qualify as a common cancer for the list, the estimated annual incidence for 2012 had to be 40,000 cases or more.

The most common type of cancer on the list is prostate cancer, with more than 240,000 new cases expected in the United States in 2012

Amount spent by the US government (not including many other special programs funding breast cancer research!) in 2010
Breast cancer 631.2
Prostate Cancer 300.5

So frankly, a bill prohibiting funding of a male specific illness is nothing new and probably wont make the headlines at all.

Sorry for all the facts.

Most states' legislatures are majority Male. And, as all males believe, they have a God Given Right to an Erection. Women have no God Given Rights to anything, not even their own bodies.
