NEW YORK (Reuters) - People may have heightened risks of dying from suicide and murder if they own or have access to a gun, according to a new analysis of previous research.

Researchers found people who lived in homes with firearms were between two and three times more likely to die from either cause, compared to those who lived in homes without guns.

"There have been a lot of conflicting reports about having a firearm in the home," Andrew Anglemyer said. He is the study's lead author and an epidemiologist from the University of California, San Francisco.

Anglemyer and his coauthors write in the Annals of Internal Medicine on Monday that the U.S. has the highest prevalence of gun ownership in the world, and the majority of suicides and murders are committed with firearms.

Gun nuts claim that guns are about self-defense. Yet another study proving they are full of shit.

Mothers and wives take note. You and your children are in danger.

suicide more frequently than men, men are more likely to succeed (often on the first attempt) because men more commonly select firearms as the method. I don't recall the rates for either comparison offhand, but neither was a trivial difference, as I recall...

Study was a waste of money. Why is it this society can only believe something so evident unless it has been researched and study results published? It's like the nose on front of our faces! We can't see the forrest for the trees. It's like there's less of a chance of having an auto accident when there is less or no traffic. Of course there is more possibility of dying from a gunshot wound if you own a gun! Duh!

And the driver behind her got madder and madder at how slowly she was going for her own safety?

Window rolls down and bang bang bang bang bang into her car.

She was unhurt, thank goodness.

Glad the gunman got the anger out of his system in a *responsible* way (property damage only)?

43. Then I suggest that you get started on repealing the 2A,

it only takes 2/3 of both branches of the Congress and 3/4 of the states to ratify it, that's 38 out of the 50 states that have to vote to ratify it.
Think you can get 38 states to take away the 2A?
If so, good luck, I won't hold my breath waiting for it to happen.

Here's the process.

48. How many pepole today thought they would live to see a lot of the changes that have happened?

Change always comes a lot sooner than you think. For example, the makeup of the SCOTUS will change in my lifetime for sure. Social change of all stripes will happen in my lifetime. An absolute repeal of 2A likely will, but even if it doesn't? I will bank on laws like CCW starting to disappear. Those trends will reverse.

And even in the unlikely event that the 2A was repealed, it would still leave the states to set their own firearms policies, most of which have in their state constitutions the right to keep and bear arms for self defense/hunting.

52. That's fine

You can keep on believing there's some invisible forcefield that prevents the forces of change. I'm sure the people that lived in the past thought the same thing, thought their way of live would prevail forever. But no such thing exists. I'm sure in those states, pockets will exist where that change will lag behind. That's usually how it goes.

24. As a therapist I am more or less required to ask these questions of a suicidal patient:

I say more-or-less because it's not a legal requirement as a couple of things are, but I would be considered unprofessional, incompetent and potentially could be sanctioned if I didn't do this assessment. It's called a SLAP assessment. And I wouldn't put it in these words, I am having a conversation, but this is what I'm finding out:

How specific is your plan? (I'd probably say something like "Have you thought about what you plan to do?" and go on from there.)

To myself: How lethal is the plan they're outlining? Guns are at the TOP of the lethality scale. Hysterical impulse with a gun will kill you or maim you beyond belief.

How available is the tool? I.e., would you have to go buy a gun, pills, would you have to drive to the bridge...anything that takes longer gives more chance for survival.

What's the proximity of help? I.e., if you change your mind can you get to someone or can they get to you, can you get to someone else or me even if the pressure gets too great and you feel like there's no hope?

Guns give NO room for changing one's mind, for thinking, for deciding at the last minute that life might be worth living. Guns just plain kill you or damage you to, if you're damned lucky, a somewhat recoverable degree, and if you're not...well, that's a tool I pull out of my kit when need be too. "Keep in mind that there are a lot of unsuccessful suicides that are irretrievably damaged. A gun will destroy all your face and half of your brain and still leave you breathing.?

So, yes. This is well, well, well known. That said, any study that can dissuade one more person from dying or killing is good by me.

54. That's the marketing.

I didn't say all guns owned are purchased for that reason. I said that's been the marketing, the force of the change toward the gunification of America. The push has been driven by fear. I grew up in a family of hunters. I'm not anti-gun by nature. If there hadn't been this push to put guns in the hans of every American to sell more guns, I wouldn't be having this discussion with you today. Yet here we are. There will be a pushback and change will eventually start going in the other direction when Americans have had enough. And it will happen. All the kids cowering in classrooms from all the school shootings when they've had enough shooter drills will start voting.
