Rush Limbaugh Advertiser Exodus Continues as 22 Companies Pull Ads

Source: ABC News

The Rush Limbaugh advertiser exodus continued Tuesday with at least two more companies adding their names to the rapidly growing list of advertisers that have pulled commercials from the conservative talk radio host’s show.

So far, at least 17 advertisers and two radio stations have pledged to wipe their ads from the show after Limbaugh called Georgetown law school student Sandra Fluke a “slut” and a “prostitute” after she testified before Congress about insurance coverage of contraception last week. Five additional companies have said their ads aired by mistake during Limbaugh’s program and vowed to scrub their ads from Limbaugh’s three-hour time slot.

The list now includes: Geico, Netflix, Service Magic home contractor, Goodwill, Amberen menopause medication, PolyCom web conferencing, Hadeed Carpets, Accuquote Life Insurance, Vitacost vitamin supplier, Bonobos clothing company, Sensa weight- loss program, Thompson Creek Windows, AOL, Tax Resolution Services, ProFlowers, Legal Zoom online document creator, Carbonite web security firm, Citrix software maker, Sleep Train Mattresses, Sleep Number mattresses and Quicken Loans.

“To put it frankly, Mr. Limbaugh’s recent comments have been unsettling, and many of our fans have voiced concern that Vitacost endorses these views,” Vitacost posted on its Facebook page. “These comments are definitely not in line with our brand values, and in listening to our fans we’ve decided to remove our advertising from the program.”

Is being called a slut and prostitute worse than what Bill Maher and Howard Stern called Sarah Palin; the "C" word? Why all the outrage now? Where was everyone when Ed Schultz called Laura Ingraham a slut? Where's the level playing field? All are horrible insults to women and should have been condemned equally, immediately.

Wed Mar 7, 2012, 12:29 AM

The context is somewhat different- thus I think the outrage.
Fluke has never participated in public hate speech like the women
you mention. Is that fair? Does it imply that the other women
deserved it? No- it does not excuse the behavior of ANY one who
refers to women like that.
But when a woman puts herself out there in a public forum
attacking people, the odds rise that people will call her such names.
Again, is it right? No. Not in any circumstance.

Back to Fluke though- She is a student who testified before Congress
about the contraception issue and VERY importantly, made it clear
that contraception is needed and used by many women/girls to manage
medical conditions. It is not simply prescribed for birth control- it has
other medical uses. She simply stated facts, without a confrontational
attitude, which would have most likely drawn more negative comments
about her.

Rush is spreading propaganda about the medical uses of contraception.
And he turned the discussion into something completely else-
insinuating that ALL women using it are using it to have sex.

Women with daughters who use contraceptives for ovarian cysts,
regulating dehabilitating menses and other female problems were
probably the most outraged of all who called for his apology and resignation.

That is how I see it, and again, agree- the language should not
be accepted in any case.

Including vile and deceptive ones like Palin and Ingraham.

he took full responsibility for his vile words against her. She accepted his apology. I think he even called her personally. He then took himself off the air for a period of time. He said he would never use those words again, and he hasn't. Big difference between Ed and Limbaugh, who blames everyone but himself for his 3 day viscious attack on Fluke. His non-apology was a joke! He has been denigrating women for 20 years. Time he is removed.

Sarah Palin and Laura Ingraham are public personalities.

Sandra Fluke is a young woman who said, "You know, my friend lost an ovary because of a resistance to cover her prescription."

So, yes, while these "horrible insults" are not acceptable, this case is exceptional.

The last line in your only post gave me the impression that you were not hopelessly beyond help. I once had my butt handed to me in a debate by a fellow member of this great forum. The debate was about the racism all women in America face. In the end, I learned a whole new way of seeing women AND an important thing about the Democratic Underground: The ladies around here can "kick ass and take names" but if you if you give them a chance, they'll teach you a thing or two as well. Sorry to see you go

But, Ed Schultz did get suspended. He was forced to apologize? But he did apologize. He apologized more than once. He did not blame anybody but himself.

I have no use for hateful speech. And your post was good. I watch Ed every now and then and was not aware of why he was suspended. He told us. I look forward to watching him every now and then and will not tolerate those kind of gaffe's. But, I did not hear him say it.

But I guess if someone is incapable of discerning hate speech,
they don't know any better.
Doesn't make them "bad" Americans, just ignorant ones.
Which would constitute 99% of his audience I suppose.
Anyone who would defend him after this incident can offer no other defense
themselves for condoning such outrageous statements- but ignorance.

It has been a repuke meme spread nefariously that somehow Maher calling Palin the C word is equivalent to Rush Limpballs vitriol.

1. Sarah Palin is a public figure and not a private citizen like Fluke. When one becomes a public figure, one allows all sorts of criticisms and attacks,
2. Bill Maher is a comedian and not a political commentator/self-proclaimed leader of the repukes, and,
3. Bill Maher's comments were on a restricted cable channel only seen by subscribers and rated for adults only.

Hopefully he can still read the responses even though we can't see him responding like a mime.
